HUDDERSFIELD TOWN SACKED manager Lee Clark this morning, just hours after losing 1-0 at home to League One promotion rivals Sheffield United.
The former Newcastle and Fulham midfielder took charge of the Terriers in December 2008 and guided them to back-to-back play-off appearances, only to lose against Peterborough in last season’s final.
In November, defeat against Charlton brought an end to a run of 43 unbeaten league games, a new club record. Last night’s defeat was only the side’s third of the season, dropping them to fourth, four points off the automatic promotion places.
Chairman Dean Hoyle denied this morning that the “very difficult decision” to fire Clark and his coaching team was related to last night’s defeat, saying that “concerns have been raised over recent weeks.”
Clark has been linked with the managerial vacancy at Leeds United since Simon Grayson was sacked earlier this month. As news of his sacking broke this morning, bookmakers rushed to slash his odds of taking over at Elland Road to as little as 8/11.
“Lee and his coaching staff have put their all into the job over the past three seasons and he has made a huge contribution to the Club,” Hoyle’s statement said. However with 16 matches to go we still have an opportunity to achieve promotion and we have made this change with this in mind.”

Mark Lillis, Huddersfield’s academy manager, will take charge of the first team until a new manager is appointed.
