World Cup qualifiers: Robbie Keane still confident of booking ticket to Brazil

“Our aim now is to kick on and to beat the teams around us, Sweden and Austria. Our main objective is to finish second,” the skipper said.

IRELAND CAPTAIN Robbie Keane says his team remain ‘on course’ to finish second in their World Cup qualification group.

Goals from Marc Wilson, Jonathan Walters and Darren O’Dea, as well as an own goal, helped to ensure a 4-1 Irish victory over the Faroe Islands on Tuesday, and Keane believes that the performance is a result of unity within the camp and indicated that the squad would aim to progress.

“It was a big test for all of the players after Friday’s disappointing result,” Keane said of the 6-1 thrashing at the hands of Germany.

“It was important that we stood up for each other and we certainly did tonight. I’ve said it before, that it’s important we all stick together when you’re going through something like this, important that the whole team, that the whole squad is on board.

“Lads could easily have crumbled with the amount of pressure they’ve been under but fair play to them, they didn’t.

“Our aim now is to kick on and to beat the teams around us, Sweden and Austria. Our main objective is to finish second and we’re still on course to do that.”

Goalscorer Walters told reporters that it was ‘a great win’ for the team as it demonstrated their ability to respond positively to difficult circumstances.

“Of course it was difficult but I think we’ve shown we can bounce back. We’ve won 4-1 here and we could have got a few more,” he said. ”It was a great win for us, it was a difficult one for us but we won. Losing 6-1 is one of those results you’ve just got to deal with. As players, as a unit, as a squad — staff included — but we showed tonight we can deal with it,” he added.

It’s strange the FAI haven’t publicly backed Trapattoni, says Brian Kerr

FAI a disgrace here, they should be making a statement one way or the other and put an end to this speculation. I get the feeling they are hoping the fuss will die down and they can get on with doing what they do best, nothing.

  • He obviously didn’t see the performance Sweden had in the second half of the German match, he played brutal last night trying to claim a Poxy goal that didn’t touch him!!! Trap is too defensive minded and we don’t have good enough defenders to just sit back and defend and that clearly showed against the Germans!!!

  • he mite claim a few imaginary goals for us that someone else has scored the delusional fool…

  • I think Robbie has lost touch with reality since moving to ‘LA LA Land’

  • Would have said we had a chance when the Germans were hammering Sweden but the fact that Sweden ended up getting a point in Germany changes everything. The Swedes did better than we did in the Euros and the fact remains is that under Trap we hav’nt even beaten a team of their calibre eg against Bulgaria, who were our threat to second place for the last World cup qualifiers, we drew twice. Slovakia who were our main threat for second spot in the last qualifiers drew twice with us. We cant beat an average European team with a slight chance of qualification. OK we beat Armenia and Estonia but they probably had nosebleeds and vertigo being as high as they ended up.

Not with the likes of Robbie and O’Shea in the team. They have been good servants. but time has to be called on them

  • Robbie can book his plane, tickets, match tickets, (wonder who he will be supporting) and hotel rooms. But I would imagine he will be paying for them himself because I can’t see Ireland qualifying.

  • Robbie is backing Trap because when Trap goes Robbie is right behind him. He was claiming that goal because it will probably be his last for Ireland. Thanks for the memories Robbie but quit while your still slightly ahead

  • the one and only season Robbie is backing Crapatoni is he knows if a new manager comes in hes finished. and i have lost all respect for him, blatantly cheating claiming he scored last night when he knew it was Walters goal. has any media quizzed him on this?

  • Does anyone else not find it strange and a bit sad that the Ireland manager and now captain have both said that we playing for second in the group , i know we don’t have much hope against Germany but Jesus you don’t have to tell them that

  • Keane knows if trappatoni goes he’s unlikely to play that much with a new manager, especially travelling from LA. Bet he hopes its not Benitez !

    • Great way to talk about our highest ever goal scorer and one of the top international goal scorers of all time – a guy who has consistently made himself available for all games even when others were pulling out. Bit of respect may be in order…..unless you fancy pulling on your boots and having a go?

54 international goals Martin – including goals against yugoslavia, holland, germany, denmark, russia, spain, croatia, swden, italy and france. Facts speak for themselves. 26th highest goal scorer in history of international football – he’s no average footballer.

  • C’mon lads lets get behind them rather than givin out about them, we’re a tiny island and we do well with what we have largely to do with the unbelievable fans and support, we can do it, Hon Ireland!

  • Scored a great goal against the Faroes to be fair…..

  • If we can get the win against Sweden then second place will be ours

    • Here’s hoping!!!! After the Austrian’s display against Kazakhstan, I’d be worried of even getting a win against the
Austrians let alone the Swedish. I think we’re more realistic in hoping The Swede’s blow hot and cold like they usually do and we get them on an off day!!!
