‘We’ve got to wear it’ – Irish players reflect on their humbling defeat

Jamie Heaslip took the defeat on the chin while All Blacks coach Steve Hansen was sparing with his praise.

WHEN THE LAST of the lights were switched off at Eden Park it was just after midnight – it was hard to imagine that a spectacle of superb, running rugby had unfolded there just three hours before.

The Irish players, humbled 42-10 by a scintillating All Black side, left by bus just after 11pm (NZ time) and more than one had been walking gingerly.

Before he could get into the post-mortem after his side’s defeat, Ireland coach Declan Kidney was forced to address a raft of injury queries.

Kidney commented, “(Cian) got a knock in the shoulder so we will have to look at that and see how it goes in the next 24 hours.

We will have to see how Mike Ross, too, is holding up and Declan Fitzpatrick, obviously, pulled up with a tight hamstring.

“Other bangs and knocks are what you would expect so nobody is ruled out,” he added. “(Keith Earls’) shoulder is a little bit sore too but I could give you names of half a dozen lads that are like that too.”

The All Blacks’ injury update? Victor Vito got a bad cut above his eye but should be fine for next Saturday’s match in Christchurch.

A long way from there to here

Four New Zealand players came out to address the media scrums and were decked out in expensive suits, complete with the Silver Fern emblem, as they stood in front of sponsorship signage.

Fergus McFadden, Peter O’Mahony and Jamie Heaslip slipped into the room in their Irish team tracksuits and sat patiently while the victors laughed, joked and talked of improving for next week.

Heaslip, as is his post-match custom, worked away on an apple and tried to remain positive.

“We gotta wear it,” he admitted, “we created a lot of mistakes, a lot of turnovers. We’ve just got to wear it.”

We’ve got to look at the video, and it is not going to be nice, but that is international rugby.

“If you make a mistake, a team like New Zealand are going to put seven points on you, like they did every time we made a mistake.”

The tackle, not the tries

Julian Savea admitted earlier in the week that he was nervous to be in the company of All Black stars such as Richie McCaw and Dan Carter but he looked anything but against Ireland.

You can see a player scoring superb tries on television and you can talk to his coaches and teammates but witnessing Savea live, in action, this evening was a pleasure.

His pace and power, and the way he linked up with Israel Dagg, was immense.

Rob Kearney and Fergus McFadden were terrorised by the duo and Savea was taken off with more than 20 minutes to go to a rousing reception from the home fans.

New Zealand’s backs coach, Ian Foster said, “In the shed afterwards, the thing I praised him about probably wasn’t the three tries.

It was that first kick that Dan Carter put down the line, (Kearney) just ran it back and Julian smashed him and created three points (from the resulting penalty).

As for the AB’s coach. Steve Hansen remarked that the ‘young man on the wing wasn’t bad, was he?’

  • ok, i hear ya although o’callaghan has been dropped and rightly so, heaslip would prob have been dropped by now if ferris was touring and if other possibilities had not disappeared ie; leamy, wallace etc

  • I had foolish optimism for this morning.

I have realistic fear for next week.

  • Why is everyone ignoring BODs terrible game,a young Murray got slated for in experience yet the most experienced player on the pitch played like a headless chicken…All I want to see is players being rated fairly ,in the other thread Murrays head was out on the block and nothing said about Drico..People need to give Murray time, its the same with Sexton when he was coming through, you can have all the talent in the world but if your do not have experience, you won’t have a good time..People were calling for Reddan, but weren’t we supose to be building towards the future? If Conor can speed up his game,he will be a top class scrum halfhis defence is great too.Earls looked hungry and McFadden was lively, would have preferred to have gotten Zebo more ball,he was dying for a chance…Heaslip is slowly picking up his game but he needs someone to compete for the 8 jersey,he can’t be our only choice

  • Can you believe the conservatism in Irish sport. You see the way yer man Gav is going on about bringing back Darcy and O’Callaghan, as if there’s only 15 people in Ireland who can play rugby and for the love of God we’d better pick them every time.

Today proved two things – the All Blacks are a level above us, 5 levels in terms of attack. But also that you can throw new players into the mix, like Zebo and Fitzpatrick and it’s not the end of the world! It’s taken a long time but we’ve got quite a large squad of players and good young talent, you can’t be playing Darcy and O’Callaghan in every game, even the Summer Tours, until they retire/die of old age. New blood is a great thing in sport.

    • I’m not saying it isnt new blood is great
but knowing when to put them in is a huge responsibility on the coach and I don’t think having the new blood defend their line for eighty mins will do anybody any good it could do more damage with confidence morale etc

  • a harsh lesson but nothing new. all blacks are light years ahead of us. zebo a talented and exciting attacker but no defence, trimble would have been in his element and a hard hitter all day. agree with you guys that we are easy to read.

    • Watched any Leinster games recently not finished and Jamie heaslip is he finished because he hasn’t had a good game for Ireland in god knows when and u could even go as far as saying
Then that o’brien could be dropped has never really dominated a game like a macaw or a pocock at international level and if we are clinging to to hope with players like darcy and we are moving on now why not drop o’driscoll and o’connell and leave rog at home too

    • Gavin Darcy has been terrible at international level with the past two years, nothing to do with his age, just he’s been terrible. If you can’t see that I would question your understanding of the game. Rog has been dropped for sexton and I know you didn’t just call for the head of O Connell, STILL Ireland’s best player!

  • Same as usual good start throwing the ball around , then the opposite team move up a few gears and we struggle . I know this was the all blacks , but it’s the same type of play most games . Ireland are just to easy to read.

  • There is one fundamental problem on this Irish team and it’s the ” attitude” I would have had a lot of dealings with Irish teams over the years, all be it from a distance but I got to see some of the going on’ s….. A number of them get this kinda mini ” god complex” like we are to good to interact. I have had the pleasure of meeting many new Zealand players over the years also, they just seem different, like there still playing schools rugby, all mixing in together etc etc .. I know it’s only a small point but this ” attitude” stems from youth rugby… I maybe completely left field with this but feel its true.

Sexton should buy Dan Carters DVD and see how a real no 10 plays !

  • Just to clarify the ” attitude” is from both teams… Good and bad

    • yer man gavin doyle must be related to darcy or something, he is popping up all over the place calling for the return of the guy who knocked on more balls than he caught during the six nations. Darcy was a great player for many years for ireland, everyone knows that. He is still good for Leinster but he is disastrous for ireland and has not had a good game in the green since 2009. Life moves on.

      Reply
    • No I’m not but when he plays with bod in centre it is more secure and if he is being dropped why hasnt Jamie heaslip been dropped hasn’t had a good game since he got that injury a few years ago same with o’Callaghan

      Reply
    • Ah Gavin, O Callaghan has been dropped for the last few games. Just accept it, Darcy was a great servant but he’s been terrible for near on 2 years now. It’s that type of clinging to hope that has us in the position we are in. He’s not playing well, he’s moving on, so lets find someone new! Calling for him to shore up the team is irony personified!

      Reply
  • Simple fact is darcy even at his age is a better centre than earls. Earls is the best winger we have but he’s not a centre.
Anyone who watched darcy play for leinster would know he is a key part of their defence.
If you want to scape goat darcy then at least play a centre in his place. McFadden is a centre earls is a wing. Playing one player out of position is bad enough but two?
If there’s not a phone call asking Leo cullen to hop on a plane then the rest of the team should just come home.
