THE PROBLEMS KEEP coming for Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni.

The Italian saw his side hammered 6-1 against Germany on Friday night. And as he prepares for the must-win clash against minnows the Faroe Islands tomorrow night, he’s now facing a ‘player revolt’.

Stephen Kelly had a training ground row with Trap’s assistant Marco Tardelli and the Fulham defender had to be persuaded to board the flight to Vagar later on yesterday afternoon, according to the Irish Daily Mail.

Kelly has been consistently ignored by the management team and has recently talked about his Euro 2012 experience, in which he saw no game time.

Toronto FC player Darren O’Dea was preferred to Kelly on Friday night, as he partnered John O’Shea in the record-breaking defeat. Yesterday, skipper Robbie Keane was declared fit to start tomorrow while Andy Keogh has been ruled out.

How do you think tomorrow’s game will go?

Opinion: It’s Trap, and not the players, who is to blame for Ireland’s problems

  • This Irish team is a mess and I’m not pointing the finger at the players. It is time that the vastly overpaid manager and his back room team were sent packing.

    • Trapp took a huge pay cut and stayed in the job, you can’t expect young inexperienced players to compete against the likes of Germany, i agree the team got a reality check, but its the players that need to focus…

    • young and inexperienced? most of the germans were younger than us. it wasnt a gulf in age, it was a gulf in class

    • Young players need guidence not confusion. I’m confused listening to him with a translator on basic interviews. Imagine taking technical instruction from Trap. its a full on mis managed mess that must result in Trap going & a fan boycott across the FAI International set up & domestic leagues until such a time when John Delaney steps aside.

    • Kev he didn’t take a pay cut, he was on 1.5million, he is now on 1.7million!!!!

      Reply
    • And what about the rest of their pay , including Tardelli and that girl that has to translate for the “manager” . The whole situation is a complete shambles , but at least the FAI are consistent .

  • That’s another player who has fallen out wit the management team, losing count of how many that is now. Why does Trap insist on playing these players who are either, not playing for a club or are playing in the reserves, ahead of premier league players and players that play regular football!!?

Trap seems to have completely lost the dressing room – picking horrendous players over mediocre, but solid players. As poor as some of the current selection are, we are still not a team that should be losing 6-1 at home to Germany. That heavy defeat was an accumulated result of stubbornly picking the “Yes men” for so long and then at the last moment, picking some younger players who he has frequently refused to acknowledge or who he frequently criticises – One example: I don’t know how many times I’ve heard him criticise Seamus Coleman since he first got into the Everton first team. As much as Coleman’s had to overcome second-season syndrome through a combination of unfortunate injuries and feeling the pressure, he’s still a betters choice on the right wing than Simon Cox. How the likes of Clarke and Shane Long are still even talking to Trap (maybe they don’t), I’ll never know. If I was in their position, I wouldn’t exactly be up to performing for this guy. Maybe this is all a MAJOR misunderstanding that we’ll all lay at in years to come: it’s all simply because his communication skills are inadequate at best. Maybe we should all have paid more attention to that video of his infamous press-conference when he was Bayern München coach rather than laughing with it. He continues to refuse to utilise players in their best positions, instead forcing them into his methods. It’s like watching my one-year old trying to put her triangular block into a circular hole. The difference is, she eventually susses out it needs to go into the triangular hole.

OK, rant over. I needed that!

I hate to say this, but I hope the Faroes beat us and the FAI have no choice but to sack Trap. He certainly doesn’t look like quitting though, the stubborn aul sod, and why would he? Easy money.

  • Playing players like o dee ahead of premier league regulars Kelly and Wilson is just the tip off the ice berg under the trap era. Trap and tardelli have to go, I know the expense will hurt but if you have no fans turning up to the Aviva what is worse???

Teflon Delaney needs to be looked at too. He was there for the Saipan fiasco, instrumental in appointing and supporting the incompetent Staunton and gave Trap a new contract before the euros, sounds like three strikes to me!!

I agree we don’t have the players we once had but all are still professional. The management have lost the trust of the players and the team has zero spirit . You’d be surprised where a bit of collective spirit will get you….

I couldnt see brian mc dermot, sean o driscol, roy keane,mc carthy doin it half assed not goin to league sitting on a chair sub_contracting their job and watching dvds..also delaney has to go to..his salary his way over estimated for the work he does..when league of ireland clubs are struggling..the whole enity of irish football has to be rethought…grassroots up..look at belguim they did it a few years ago it was’nt easy for them but look at the return they are getting now..look at the irfu..change needs to come..every irish supporter deserves it..every dad/mom bringing their kids to trainning and matchdays in parks deserve it..but first things first tommorrow nights i can see the players on the squad revolting hoping to get a change..and maybe loosing tommorrow might be greatest thing to happen to irish football since italia 90

I didn’t see the point in us going to the Euro as we had no game plan or ability to actually win a match, this has been the case all through the Trapattoni reign, it is amazing that it has taken this long but the tide is finally turning and people are beginning to see through this con man, let’s get a decent manager in and start from now building a team we can be proud of.

As a huge Irish Sports fan i can safely say I never felt as much shame as I did watching that mess in Poland, like a stag weekend from hell. Roy Keane is wrong a lot but he was spot on with his call on the irish fans.

    Long-Walters.

    Subs-Brian Murphy (gk) Ireland,Pilkington,A Reid, Pearce,Keane,Doyle,S Reid.

  • @Jason. My point is away fans for Ireland have been through the wringer and been through the darkest days. We are a snobby old bunch of fans at home, and while I think we have decent players at our disposal, a slaughtering by Germany is only surprising in the sense that we showed no spirit at all

  • This may have already been said, however the manager is out of touch with the game. We resort to the same tactic’s every game. He refuses to pick superior players in positions and instead sticks to players which he views fits his system. The fact of the matter is even if we had an Alonso or Xavi in our team, the manager would still potentially not pick them as they do not fit his system. He says we dont have the players, I disagree. I admit, even if we played the way I would like us to play, I still would not see us beating the Germans, but at least a draw would potentially of being obtainable. Another concern is the manager says there are no more players to discover!? This is blasphemy as far as I am concerned, there are always players coming through at under age level or in the leagues if he viewed the games. Its a sad thing to say our manager doesn’t actually view our players. Our team has no plan B, even the weakest teams have a plan B.

The most damning thing of all, is his stubbornness, his man management is disgraceful and has clearly lost the dressing room. Our players are being good little Irish lads and not kicking up a fuss but now it looks even the players have said enough is enough. Last Friday against the Germans I didn’t see a team, I didn’t see a team that would fight until the end, I saw school boys, completely out of depth and a manager who has shown no leadership.

For the last 4 years I have wanted Trap to go, no disrespect to man, huge respect for what he has done in the game, but his time has come and past. Even if we are not to qualify, I want to see us attempt to play football. Give us something to get excited about, not go right 90 minutes of balls to the wall.

  • I have been following Irish football for 40 years and the sad reality is that at this present time we simply do not have the quality of player to compete.(we do have lots of young players coming through so do not despair for the future). With injuries, abstentions and retirements our results reflect where we are at the moment. The players have given it all they have got and I can’t see how the manager could really have changed much. The chant’ you only sing when you’re winning’ comes to mind with some of the supporters comments that have appeared in the papers recently about the players and manager. its time to support them not put them down.

    • Fair play to you Paul. I saw many people leaving the Aviva with 20 minutes to go. Where was the support that we had in Poland?

    • but in fairness lads they are crap……euros was a farce……manager has too go…..bottom line

I don’t agree Paul, our players are good enough to outplay the weaker teams in the groups, yet we never do, we struggle and while we often get a lucky result they often outplay us. When Trappattoni was manager of Italy, they played negative football and struggled in the same way, within two years of him being sacked, Italy won the world cup with more or less the same players he had at his disposal so he has a track record of under achieving. I am not saying we can win the world cup but we can do a lot better than we are at present.

As a follower for a long time myself one of the most depressing things I saw was us jumping around the place having been totally outplayed and humiliated by Russia during the last campaign. Only the luckiest result I have ever seen and some outstanding bravery by Dunne and Given in particular got us a 0-0 draw but to focus on the result and ignore the evidence in front of our eyes is exactly what has us in this mess.
Two simple things Trap hasn’t done are play the best players at his disposal and unearth some second generation Irish to help us out, they should be the priorities going forward and we will make some progress.

    • @Declan Where was the support like in Poland you say? We didn’t go to Poland to receive the best fans award. Getting hammered in the Euros and cheering about it was quite embarrassing really, witnessing that disaster the other night and expecting fans to do the same would’ve made our fans the laughing stock of Europe. I think the main difference between the fans the other night and from the euros was they weren’t a bunch of eejits on the piss 24/7 and could actually see what a disgrace we’ve become.

      Reply
    • What would you have suggested we do in Gdansk and Poznan??? Fly home after 60 minutes? Go cry in a f**kin pub somewhere? Yes there were drunken eejits over there, so what. Do you even realise what it takes to watch the team you love hey absolutely hammered, take It on the chin and sing anyway? We could all have filed out of that stadium in protest, or worse rioted like te English might have, but we didn’t. Go away and fill your glass to half full wud ya

It’s time for trap to go, we played quality opposition that all play champions league football, where we have one player, a very over rated Mcgeady… But I don’t get his tactics, some of the players starting, o dea, ward, cox, they play in lesser leagues as to Clarke Kelly long! We’re saying that latter guys are inexperienced as to the other boys, but surely if you start week in week out in a better division Surely your a better player!!
We need to say goodbye to trap, maybe look at mick mac to come back or coyle or maybe somebody that can speak the language!!!

  • Some players sniff Trap’s weakened position and are exploiting it perhaps with a view to heaping on pressure. Gibson (not enough room for him and his ego in the Aviva), McClean (does anybody think he is really injured – he will be available next weekend for Sunderland) and now Kelly ( the reason he’s being ignored is that he’s useless – does he honestly think he’s better than Coleman). Irrespective of anything else, if Trap no longer has the dressing room, he cannot continue to manage.
