SOLEMIA HAS WON the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp on Sunday, springing a huge surprise by beating Orfevre in the prestigious race.

The four-year-old filly claimed one of Europe’s biggest prizes by cutting down the Japanese star close to home.

Over £20,000 had been matched at 1.01 on Betfair on the runner-up.

Solemia was always prominent under Olivier Peslier as Ernest Hemingway and Robin Hood – both stablemates of Camelot – made the early running.

Just as it looked like Orfevre would claim a famous win for Japan under Christophe Soumillon, but the son of Stay Gold began to tie up when three lengths ahead and Peslier manager to force Solemia’s head in front on the line for a famous win.

The victory was also the second of the day for Peslier and trainer Carlos Laffon-Parias.
