LAST YEAR’S CORK senior hurling finalists Sarsfields and Midleton got back to winning ways over the weekend in the second round of the county SHC.

Both clubs had lost out in their first round ties the previous week – Sarsfields at the hands of Douglas and Midleton against Erins Own – but they enjoyed a successful outing on the backdoor route yesterday.

Sarsfields – Cork champions in 2008, 2010 and 2012 before they lost last year’s decider – cruised to a 2-25 to 0-15 win over Bride Rovers with Cork senior Cian McCarthy hitting 1-10 while former Wexford senior Eoin Quigley grabbed 0-4. Other members of Jimmy Barry-Murphy’s Rebels panel that were in action included Conor O’Sullivan and Daniel Kearney.

Reigning champions Midleton enjoyed a 3-18 to 1-13 success against Killeagh in Youghal yesterday with Conor Lehane firing 0-10 and fellow inter-county player Luke O’Farrell striking 0-3. Former Cork great Joe Deane hit 0-6 for Killeagh.

It was a busy weekend of club senior football action in Galway with last year’s finalists Corofin and Salthill-Knocknacarra both emerging victorious yesterday. The kingpins Corofin, who lost out to Castlebar Mitchels in the AIB Connacht SFC last year, got the better of Tuam Stars with a comfortable 1-10 to 0-3 success.

Former Connacht rugby star Gavin Duffy helped Salthill-Knocknacarra to a 2-11 to 2-9 triumph over Kilconly in a game that saw Sean Armstrong bang home two goals for the winners.
