Poll: Will you support Cian O’Connor?

The show-jumper will compete for Olympic gold in the coming month, but is the country behind him?

HE WON OUR hearts by winning gold in Athens eight years ago.

However, after the winning horse Waterford Crystal tested positive for banned substances, the Irish rider was disqualified, heaping great embarrassment on the country.

Since Michael Carruth succeeded in 1992, only Michelle Smith has been awarded gold in Irish colours.

Twenty years on, equestrianism will again present one of our strongest chances of medal success. Waterford Crystal will not be competing, Blue Loyd will carry the 32-year-old rider who has been issued a late call-up in place of Denis Lynch.

However, given O’Connor’s history, can you give him your full backing? Or, will you be exercising your right to Schadenfreude if he fails?
