Poll: Is Roy Hodgson a good appointment as England manager?

Do you reckon the ex-United Arab Emirates boss represents a good choice?

Hodgson has plenty of experience in international football.
Hodgson has plenty of experience in international football.

RUMOURS ABOUND THAT Roy Hodgson will sign on the dotted line and become England manager sometime within the next 24 hours.

And if he does take over, Hodgson will have considerable experience to look back on in international football, and European football in general, having managed a total of 16 different teams in eight countries over the course of his career.

The first international side he managed was Switzerland, with whom he enjoyed considerable success. He helped them qualify for both World Cup 94, and Euro 96, in addition to guiding them to 3rd place in the FIFA world rankings at one stage.

Hodgson later went on to manage the United Arab Emirates national team, where he failed to make much of an impact.

He also performed relatively well during his brief stint as Finland manager, overseeing their narrow failure to qualify for Euro 2008. And in fact, this success subsequently led to him being linked with the Ireland manager’s job before agreeing to take over at Fulham.

Therefore, it’s fair to say Hodgson’s managerial CV is relatively solid if unspectacular.

With that in mind, is the current West Brom boss a good appointment?

  • England haven’t had a likeable manager since Bobby Robson and that’s exactly what they get with Roy Hodgson. He’s the FA marketing departments dream appointment… respected by his peers… experienced manager… and most importantly, an unknown outside of football. Roy Hodgson has a private life and that’s exactly what it is, private. He carries no baggage into the job unlike Harry Redknapp. The FA weren’t willing to take the risk of any more of Harry Redknapps skeletons leaping from the closet. The England Managers job has been a PR disaster for the FA for years now and with Roy Hodgson the only bad press possible is from results.

  • This is the first time ever England have a manager with international experience. He has managed in World cups and European championships as well as champions league, Serie A and the premiership. He got Switzerland to the 94 world cup when England couldn’t and Fulham to a Uefa cup final where they were narrowly beaten. I know Harry was the popular choice but I can’t see why people would complain. And before anyone mentions Liverpool, look at the turmoil they were in when he took over with court cases and owners changing and having little money to spend in the one transfer window he was there.

  • Poor Roy. He’s just a stop-gap until England fail to win the Euros and then he’ll be booted out and Uncle ‘arry will the saviour with two years to get England to the World Cup.
