Poll: Can Scottish football survive without Rangers?

With one half of the Old Firm demoted to the fourth tier, has interest in the SPL been exhausted?

YESTERDAY, THE MOST successful club in Scottish football, having been denied a return to the top division, were consigned to the county’s fourth tier of football. Irn Bru division three.

Rather than host crowds of over 50,000 for the visit of Hearts, Hibernian, Aberdeen and Glasgow Celtic, they will wonder whether Ibrox is still viable for the visits of Elgin City, East Stirlingshire, Stranraer and Annan Athletic.

Celtic will benefit in terms of silverware. Motherwell and Dundee United could make another push for a Champions League place – or maybe even the title. However, will the absence of Rangers ensure that the dwindling interest in the SPL is extinguished altogether? Will the league’s UEFA co-efficient be irreparably damaged by sub-standard teams entering Europe unaccustomed to the necessary standard?

Or, does  the disbandment of the Old Firm level the playing field and make a fertile environment for a much more exciting competition. Could we see a league finally able to get its house in order and free itself of sectarianism by the time SPL football returns to Ibrox (2015 at the earliest)?

  • Rangers weren’t denied entry to Scottish football’s top tier yesterday, Sevco 5088 were. Rangers don’t exist anymore, the ceased to be a club after they went into liquidation due to failing to pay tax bills of about ?50m-?70m. Rangers are no more.

The newco that replace them have played no matches, have no titles, trophies, records or history. So it’s only right that the start at the bottom and try to work their way up.

Let’s see how many of them will stick to their policy of “We don’t do walking away”.

  • The SPL is now officially a terrible league. There is one quality team in the league: Celtic. The rest are a joke. I am going to miss the Old Firm derbys and the competitiveness between Celtic and Rangers for the SPL title. Celtic champions for 2013

    • The SPL was always a poor league (in contrast to top European leagues) but let’s not forget Rangers cheated their way to titles for many years and in the process denying clubs like Hibs, Aberdeen, Hearts and Motherwell a fair chance of progressing. Murray infamously once said “for every fiver spend, I’ll spend a tenner”. Celtic hadn’t a hope of competing not to mind the other clubs.

And now we see why he could spend all the money, double contracts and tax dodging. They were able to sign big international players and coax the best talent from other SPL clubs with the offer of huge wages which nobody could compete with, but doing so by illegal means.

Celtic cut their cloth to measure, reigned in spending, introduced a wage cap and refrained from going in too deep like Rangers did. Peter Lawell and other board members knew better.

So now there’s a fairer league without Rangers. The other “useless” clubs will be able to develop and have a better chance of competing. I’m looking forward to a stronger league, it will take time but by the time Sevco 5088 get back into the SPL hopefully there’ll be several clubs competing for honours.
