Slideshow: The forgotten men of Galway hurling

The shift in Galway hurling of late has been seismic, as the following slideshow illustrates.

THE SHIFT IN Galway hurling has been seismic.

The panel that carry the county’s hopes of claiming a first All-Ireland senior hurling crown in 24 years in next Sunday’s replay against Kilkenny in Croke Park is unrecognisable from that which exited the last two championships at the All-Ireland quarter-final stage.

Of the 19 players that featured at some juncture when Galway lost by 3-17 to 3-16 in July 2010 against Tipperary, only nine will be part of next Sunday’s squad.

Of the 20 players that played a part when Waterford got the better of the Tribesmen by 2-23 to 2-13 in last year’s quarter-final clash in Thurles, only 13 are members of next Sunday’s panel.

There were 15 players who lined out at some stage for Galway at some stage in the 2010 and 2011 championship campaigns, that are no longer involved  part of the current panel.

Retirement, injury, emigration and squad omissions are some of the reasons which have contributed to their departures.

Here’s a guide to the team that could have represented Galway next Sunday.

  • Colm Callanan (Kinvara)

Battled with James Skehill for the goalkeeping spot in recent years and last minded the posts in championship for the 2010 quarter-final loss to Tipperary. Earlier that same year, he was in the side lifted the National League crown against Cork (INPHO/Lorraine O'Sullivan).
  • Damien Joyce (Cappataggle)

Last year's captain was a high-profile casualty of Anthony Cunningham's panel shake-up last winter. Joyce lined out at right corner-back on the Galway team that contested the 2005 All-Ireland senior final while also amassing two National League medals (2004 and 2010) and a Fitzgibbon Cup medal with Waterford IT in 2000 (INPHO/Donall Farmer).
  • Shane Kavanagh (Kinvara)

An established defensive figure in recent years, Kavanagh was also dropped last winter. He lined out at centre-back on the team that lost that 2005 final to Cork while his personal honours include an All-Ireland minor medal in 2000 and a league medal at full-back in 2010 (INPHO/Lorraine O'Sullivan).
  • Ollie Canning (Portumna)

One of the greatest defenders in the history of the game, Canning retired at the end of 2010 without a coveted senior All-Ireland medal after lining out at left corner-back in the 2001 and 2005 final losses. He won four Allstar awards and three All-Ireland titles with his club Portumna (INPHO/James Crombie).
  • Donal Barry (Castlegar)

Wing-back for the past two seasons, Barry was cut from the squad at the end of 2011. He was a National League medal in 2010 at right half-back and was hugely impressive in that success over Cork (INPHO/Lorraine O'Sullivan).
  • John Lee (Liam Mellows)

Lee first burst to prominence in 2004 when he captained Galway to win the All-Ireland minor title. Also won an U21 medal in 2007 with a final victory over Dublin and a Fitzgibbon Cup medal with NUI Galway in 2010. Last featured in the championship as a substitute in the defeat to Waterford last July (INPHO/Donall Farmer).
  • Adrian Cullinane (Craughwell)

Another casualty of the squad makeover after last season, Cullinane started at half-back in that defeat to Waterford. He won an All-Ireland minor medal with Galway in 2000, Fitzgibbon Cup medals with Waterford IT in 2004 and 2006, and two National League medals in 2004 and 2010 (INPHO/Lorraine O'Sullivan).
  • Barry Daly (Clarinbridge)

An unlucky figure to miss out having played in this spring's league before his season was ended by a groin injury he sustained in April. The captain of Galway's All-Ireland U21 winning outfit last September, he also won an All-Ireland club medal with Clarinbridge in 2011 and a Fitzgibbon cup medal with NUI Galway in 2010 (INPHO/Lorraine O'Sullivan).
  • Eoin Lynch (Portumna)

Last featured in the 2010 Leinster final loss to Kilkenny. Struck up a midfield partnership with Leo Smith, brother of Galway senior Andy, on the Portumna team that won the All-Ireland club championship in 2006, 2008 and 2009 (INPHO/Lorraine O'Sullivan).
  • Ger Farragher (Castlegar)

One of the most exciting underage prospects when he won All-Ireland minor medals in 1999 and 2000 before being denied a third in 2001 by Cork. Corner-forward on the Galway team that lost the 2005 All-Ireland final to Cork and won an Allstar that year. Was still a fixture in the championship side last year (INPHO/Lorraine O'Sullivan).
  • Kevin Hayes (Portumna)

Centre-forward on the team that were pipped by a point by Tipperary in the All-Ireland quarter-final in 2010. Also shone in that position on club level on those Portumna teams that won three of the last seven All-Ireland crowns (INPHO/Lorraine O'Sullivan).
  • Alan Kerins (Clarinbridge)

A long-serving figure for Galway who played in the championship last years, Kerins started on the 2001 and 2005 teams that lost All-Ireland finals. Does have All-Ireland medals to his name though with the Galway senior footballers in 2001, Salthill-Knocknacarra in the All-Ireland Club SFC in 2006 and Clarinbridge in the All-Ireland Club SHC last year (INPHO/James Crombie).
  • Aongus Callanan (Liam Mellows)

Callanan is currently in Australia and is another unlucky figure not to be playing with Anthony Cunningham having mentioned him before the drawn final as a player they attempted to lure back into the fold. The Liam Mellows players has an All-Ireland U21 medal to his credit from 2005 while he won Fitzgibbon Cup medals with Limerick IT in 2005 and 2007 (INPHO/Lorraine O'Sullivan).
  • Joe Gantley (Beagh)

A 2005 All-Ireland U21 medal winner, Gantley showcased his attacking talents in recent seasons. He notched the match-winning goal in the 2009 qualifier win over Cork and started at centre-forward in last year's quarter-final defeat to Waterford (INPHO/Lorraine O'Sullivan).
  • Eanna Ryan (Killimordaly)

Another All-Ireland U21 winner in 2005, Ryan was a regular presence in the Galway senior team in 2010. He struck 1-1 in the All-Ireland quarter-final loss to Tipperary that year (INPHO/Donall Farmer).
