Open thread: what do you hope to see at the Olympics over the coming months?

Gold for Katie? Phelps beaten? Bill O’Herlihy losing his patience with Jerry Kiernan?

JUST ONE MORE sleep.  The Olympic Games will get underway in London tomorrow with what promises to be a stunning Danny Boyle-created opening ceremony in Stratford featuring farm animals, nurses and plenty of fireworks.

Then the real action will begin.

Waving the tricolour in front of a supposed TV audience of two billion worldwide, Katie Taylor will lead the Irish team onto centre-stage. They travel, as always,  more in hope than expectation.

Taylor is clearly our brightest prospect of a golden moment over the next fortnight but her fellow boxers will fancy their chances too. Track stars like Derval O’Rourke and Paul Hession will want to shine on the biggest stage while sailors, swimmers, walkers and the rest of the squad target the podium.

Familiar names like Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps will be challenged by young pretenders like Yohann Blake and Ryan Lochte respectively and we’ll meet new friends and watch new storylines unfold.

It’s going to be a busy 16 days or so.

So… what are you hoping to see over the course of the next couple of weeks?
