THE FATHER AND son combination of Aidan and Joseph O’Brien claimed Irish Classic success at the Curragh today.
1-5 favourite Camelot maintained his unbeaten record with a win in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby this evening after the traditional Sunday slot was changed this year in a bid to attract a bigger crowd.
In front of 22,000 spectators, 19-year-old Joseph saw off a threat from Born To Sea and Johnny Murtagh in testing conditions to lead the star colt home by a margin of two lengths.
We were very worried about the ground,” Aiden O’Brien said after the win. “At home he doesn’t even walk on that ground. But these are days you can’t dream of.”
Owners John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith are now likely to enter Camelot in the St Leger in September as he attempts to become the first Classic Triple Crown winner since Nijinsky in 1970.
