Nicolas Roche: Everybody cheats at some stage in some aspect of life

The Irishman was critical of cyclists, such as Lance Armstrong, that have been accused of sustained doping practices.

Nicolas Roche believes the chapter on widespread doping in cycling is now closed.

NICOLAS ROCHE HAS admitted the sport of cycling is not yet clean from the scourge of doping but feels it is ‘a much cleaner one’ than it was a decade ago.

The Saxo Bank rider, son of 1987 Tour de France winner Stephen Roche, was on RTÉ’s Prime Time show on Thursday to discuss the fall-out from the United States Anti-Doping Agency’s claims that Lance Armstrong and his US Postal Service team had been involved in systematic, performance-enhancing doping for eight years.

Roche admitted the revelations that may yet cost Armstrong his seven Tour de France titles came as ‘a blast’ to the cycling world.

However, he added that professional cyclists today are ’paying for something that happened seven or eight years ago’.

When pressed on whether the sport is not drugs free, Roche responded, “I’m not saying it’s a clean one, I’m saying it’s a much cleaner one, which is a big difference.

“There is always going to be someone that will try to cheat, and cheat.” He added:

Everybody cheats at some stage, in every other aspect of life. Fake I.Ds, they cheat in their Leaving Certificate exams, soccer pitches.

“Cycling is… we’re the most restricted sportsmen. We just give away our privacy. And I wouldn’t even mind having a GPS watch on me, to be known where I am, if that can help the sport go on.”

New teammate, old allegations

Roche defended his father from any suggestions that his reputation may be tarnished due to the drug revelations that are taking down some of the sport’s biggest names.

“I don’t think my Dad has been caught or (tested) positive at any stage,” he said. “It was only that some put had put a doubt on him. There was no proof on it.

“It was only said and written that maybe there is but today there is nothing on Dad. I don’t want to implicate him in any way.

“For those riders that have been caught, I completely agree (that their reputations are tarnished) and I’ll be the first one casting a shadow on them.”

Roche signed up with the Saxo Bank team in the summer and will race alongside Alberto Contador, the Spanish cyclist who was stripped of his 2010 Tour de France after failing a doping test, in 2013. He commented:

Contador had his troubles and he paid a price for what he did over the past two years.

“There is obviously going to be more stories to come in the future but this chapter, this huge one, is now closed.

“People have the answers to the questions they were asking now let’s move on to 2013 and hopefully continue, as much as possible, the anti-doping fight that is in place now with the UCI (International Cycling Union).”

Following the airing of Prime Time, Roche took to his Twitter page in an attempt to clarify his comments:

  • Stephen Roche, Sean Kelly, Michelle Smith, Cian O’Connors horse, we aren’t the cleanest of countries when it comes to a bit of cheating in sport

  • He cannot be expected to speak for cycling and he is forgiven by me anyway for a few small errors in language. It’s the Governing bodies who are during Paul Kimmage that need to answer the questions.

  • I thought there would be more pro cyclists stronger to condemn drugs etc. in the sport and at least come out and say if what Lance is accused of is true that he should be stripped of everything and should end up being disgraced. If he hasn’t done anything I’m not sure how he has got himself into the mess he is in.

I was surprised to see one of the members of the sky team (not sure which one) say ‘it doesn’t really matter – he’s still a legend anyway’ when he was being interviewed yesterday or the day before.

With so few really speaking out strongly against it. It’s hard to believe that it’s not still widespread even if it is much cleaner.

Looking forward to Nico with Saxo Bank. Hope it goes well for him as I really enjoy the diary he does on the tours. A stage win in France next year would be a great achievement if he is let go for them!

  • tbf his father and sean kelly both speak with a bit of a Gallic twist. As for doping on cycling no tour de France winner can be considered clean from that era. it would have been impossible to win without it.

I saw the interview and this article is a bit misleading, it was obvious to me that what he meant was, there is cheating in all walks of life by some. True, that is not exactly what he said but he got slightly tongue tied and the language may have been a factor, the interviewer didn’t give him a chance to explain it properly and went on to something else.
For me watching, his basic point was clear and it was that there are still some people cheating in cycling, the same way people cheat in all walks of life. He also made clear that he won’t ever win the Tour de France but is happy doing his best as a clean athlete.

  • Blimey, his comments appear to be fairly ham-fisted

  • Everyone at the front of the Peleton when Pharmstrong was winning his Tours were doping so in effect he won 7 Tours on a level playing field!!

  • There are still massive question marks around Stephen Roche. The guys asking questions and writing articles a few years ago were vilified for doing so. These same people are the ones who have turned out to be right on the money all along when it came to drugs in cycling.

  • They are all a shower of dope peddlers.

  • May I object to the sweeping statement that ‘everyone cheats at something in every area of life’? I, and many others like me, have never cheated in any area of life.

A Frances you are a better woman than I am!

Come on, the ‘cheating’ he is referring to refers to the minor competitive advantages we take on a daily basis whether it be driving through traffic lights just as they are about to turn red to taking home a pen or two from the office…

Nobody is perfect and on occasion our slightly meaner streak comes through… That’s just life.

  • Where performance can be enhanced it will….human nature……that’s why there are drug free associations…..and you still get gimps competing jacked up in DF comp….these are the real losers .

Why was photoshop developed……nothing is what it seems.

  • And ‘cheating’ seems to be the only way some can get to the top..I’d rather die trying!

  • Bit of a clanger of an interview I thought – is English his first language? His turn of phrase sounds very French. Very easy on the eye though!

  • Curious response from such an outstanding sportsman. Everyone cheats in some aspect if their lives? Sounds like a child’s response, ‘everyone else was doing it too!’

    • Thomas, English isnt Nico’s first language, French is.
I think his syntax bacame a bit mangled.
These are not the guys the story should be focussing on-the blame, as far as Im concerned, lies with the governing body, and there is a clear danger that the people at the heart of this malaise will get off scott free.

  • To say “everybody cheats in life” says it all about his family values.
Most people nowadays seem to cheat but to have any self worth or integrity you at least need to be honest.
Our national leaders and our so called pillows of society ie church, bankers, etc are like the roach family. All cheaters. Even in local golf clubs you have a few cheats.

  • Thanks Nicolas for sharing this breaking news, finally people can find out the truth behind real-life and the Goddesses of Cycling. I have truly been enlightened/shocked since learning of this troubling matter. It makes you really wonder about this world sometimes…..

    • Your a very uplifting man nazi. You turned a decent article into your depressing view if the world. I followed his blogs over the last couple of years not because I have any great interest in cycling but when you see the physical and mental stress these guys go through, the clean ones anyway, it’s worth supporting them. While I don’t agree with his own decision to now work for a team led by convicted drugs cheats it gives he a great chance to be on a winning and now clean team
