Lennon: Celtic ‘need a miracle’ as ruthless Juve leave Champions League dream in tatters

“I’d like to ask the referee, is the game different in Italy?”

CELTIC MANAGER Neil Lennon all but conceded the Champions League last-16 tie with Juventus is over tonight.

Despite a promising start to the game in Glasgow, the Bhoys were ultimately beaten 3-0 by the Serie A giants.

“We need a miracle,” the Armagh native told ITV1. “But it’s the harsh reality of Champions League football and some of my young players will learn a huge lesson tonight. I thought for some 70-odd minutes — until the second goal — we were by far the better side, but you can’t give away goals like we gave away, sloppy.”

Celtic were a goal down within three minutes of kick-off after an awful error by Efe Ambrose — who has just returned from Africa Cup of Nations duty with tournament winners, Nigeria.

“Efe was poor for the first goal but we had good chances to equalise,” said Lennon. “Then we switched off defensively for the second goal and the third goal was poor.”

The former Northern Ireland international was furious about the officiating throughout the game however, insisting Celtic should have had at least one penalty.

Juve defenders — and Stephane Lichtsteiner in particular – wrestled with Gary Hooper and others at corners. But the referee consistently waved away claims for a penalty from the home side and a rabid Celtic Park crowd.

“I’d like to ask the referee, is the game different in Spain or Italy?” Lennon said. “Every time one of my players tried to move he was held. He should have given a penalty on at least two occasions.”

  • Some of the virulent anti-Celtic commentary is a bit odd given that it is the British team with by far the strongest links to Ireland. I doubt the same commentary accompanies every Man Utd, Liverpool and Arsenal match report. Many people in Ireland don’t understand the continuing connection Celtic had for generations, particularly in the North- West. My family are from Donegal, where Celtic continued to come and train in the summer into the 20s and 30s. Donegal people tended to emigrate to Glasgow and many more went to Scotland for seasonal work. This led to family ties right down to the present with brothers and cousins becoming part of the Irish community in Glasgow. To this day I still have a number of cousins who are season ticket holders at Celtic Park. The links are extremely strong, and to reduce them to having something to do with the Catholic-Protestant divide and the IRA shows an extreme ignorance of Irish social history, particularly as it relates to the North West. I also regularly attend LoI games, so I am not sure of the relevance of that argument either.

  • Jesus LOI fans really piss me off sometimes, I follow Pats and Celtic, there’s no law that says you can’t follow more than 1 team. Some LOI fans are so precious.

On the point of why Irish people follow Celtic look up the history and how the club embraces its Irish heritage, look up the history, even at the moment the manager and largest shareholder are both Irish . Not every fan is a RA supporter, it’s stupid and ignorant to actually think that.

  • Thought we played very well tonight, however the step up is very difficult for a team like Celtic who don’t have the resources of the really big clubs(financially). Neil Lennon has done a magnificent job with the Celts after a bit of a shaky start. He has unearthed some great talent both at home and abroad. Juve were very clinical and that’s where we need to be to compete at this level. Every Celtic fan should be very content at where we are at this moment. Disappointed but very content.

Why are people on every social media site so bitter? I support Bohs and Celtic, and I’m an avid GAA supporter. I have previously managed a soccer team and currently mentor an under 9 GAA team. why should I restrict myself to one club/ sport?
I support Celtic because the ethos of the club attracts me as an Irish person, it was founded by an Irish man who wished to alleviate the poverty of Irish people in Glasgow. It cherishes it’s Irish heritage by flying the Irish tri-colour, acknowledging its Irish link in books, CD’s, programmes etc whilst also acknowledging its place in Scotland. It is non sectarian and has always employed Protestants either as players or managers. It is supported by many in Scotland who have an Irish connection through family history.
It organises many community projects dealing with youth, fitness and mental health in Ireland and in Scotland.
I am delighted with the progress of the club. We are now debt free, turning a profit, we have an excellent youth set up that is the envy of many clubs, a scouting system that is yielding brilliant results. I only wish Bohs were in such good health:-(

Don’t bite on the trolls comments guys. Celtic actually were the better team for much of the game. It is a ruthless competition at this stage though. Can’t give up and miss chances like those. Pity.

  • Not true….Celtic draw fans from all over the world, their irish connection is no different than that of Notre Dame or the Boston Celtics in the states. They use to have a bitter rival in Rangers, but they no longer around.

  • It looks like the end of this particular campaign. The goal in the third minute was a killer.

  • Result probably an indicator of the true level of Scottish Football at the moment. The real achievement for Celtic was getting out of the group. At this stage of the competition the big boys really up their performance level, which makes it difficult to compete with.

  • Wow – a lot to chew on in the comments above. All my non-celtic supporting colleagues in the office today are saying how well celtic played, should have had 2 penalties and the goals were soft. Thats a pretty decent summation of events for me!

Proud to be a celtic fan this morning. Hope Man U go onto do it now, even though i dont live there, have only been there once and stopped watching Corrie years ago

If you are not a Celtic or Juve fan WTF are you reading the article for let alone commenting on it??

I like all sports but id say 90% of irish people support hurling and football(their OWN counties and sport) alot more intensely then the clubs competing in the premier league

  • British football always has to have a villain to blame on any defeat..lichsteiner and the old ladies dirty tactics tonight..Maradona,Ronaldo in the past…even turned on there own when castigating Beckham after there exit at the 98 WC…….well done Celtic on a spirited performance, but as always happens in every walk of life…class wins out.

  • It’s a shame the readers of journal.ie don’t support Irish soccer teams as much as they follow this British team.

    • Apart from a few stand out players the League of Ireland is fairly diabolical which partly explains why so many Irish support Scottish and English clubs. If the standard of Irish football became better then of course more people would go to games and support Irish teams as passionately as those across the water

      Reply
    • There in lies the problem. People who won’t go to games are in turn depriving the club of gate receipts. These gate receipts would pay higher wages for better players. But as I said catch 22, no fans, no big players

    • The problem that precedes people not going to games and hurting the ticket sales is finding the reason(s) why they are choosing not to go of which there are many. It’s not just football, Irish sport in general is behind the times and leagues behind our nearest neighbours have. I feel coaching has to improve from the grass roots level and maybe then Irish sports people and teams will become more successful. Look at the GAA for instance. Firstly I am not a fan of either hurling or football but the coaching given to kids from the time they are in senior infants right the way up to senior level is excellent. Maybe if out other sports bodies took a few pointers it could improve Irish sport in a major way

Don’t know why people are red thumbing him. He’s right. The general standard of coaching at 6 or 7 in Ireland is atrocious. There are exceptions, but generally we are about 70 years behind other countries.

    • So what your saying is coaching in Irish sports is excellent (GAA) and coaching in other shite sports (soccer) is poor , that’s ok so

  • Delighted with the result , a lot of their so called fans follow them because of the Catholic connection , should be supporting Hibs then , since they were the 1st to founded with a Catholic connection in Scotland but then again they don’t win much so why would they follow them #Sheep

  • This was coming for a long time to Celtic, they were played off the park both nights by Barca and anyone who watched either game could see that, they were damned luck to get away with them. Tonight, while they played well, Juve showed supreme class when it matters. Anyone who blames the ref has never watched european football, defenders are tough, and Hooper gave as god as he got.. Delighted Celtic finally got what was coming to them, the SPL shown to the level it truly is.. eventually.

  • A worrying amount of comments on this page are an embarrassment.

As for the foreign football LOI debate, LOI fans in this country are the only ones that can call themselves true football supporters its just a fact of the matter.

    Reply
    • Great way to win more people to the LOI, state they’re not ‘real football supporters’. How about focussing on the positives of the league and maybe people would be more inclined to go

      Reply
    • People wont go because of the quality of football (although its not that simple) the quality of football cant get better because people don’t go. Its an irreversible problem that stems in part from the GAA being the sporting focal point of community and regional pride across the country.

I’ll give you an example, how often do players move from GAA club in their own county? Very rarely and if they do a massive stink is made, how many move from local football clubs? Quite a lot every season, this has a knock on effect in the mindset at large which doesn’t allow local club to grow and form an identity with its own community.

Huge came with a plan , score early soak up the pressure , hit us with a sucker punch ……..it worked a treat for them ,Celtic played well a few chances , thought juve where good ( apart from lichsteiner, he was a disgrace) , but the gulf in class was fairly evident , even under pressure juve didn,t panic , Celtic are out end off unfortunately ,
    Great while it lasted ,

  • What’s the difference Italians won, they only bought themselves bit more time, Juve has close to null chances of winning champions league. Only Spanish know how to play sustainable football, not a luck football.

  • Celtic do not represent Irish people. Some may feel they represent a portion of society in Ireland like the IRA SF feel they represent Irish people. 99% of Irish people don’t support Celtic or what they stand for. Lennon wearing the couloirs of Ireland is like the IRA SF —- embarrassing.

  • Pity for the scots. They have an interesting support and bigoted chanting. As bad as Rangers in my book.Their support feeds off the divisions in the North.I also think playing Ambrose was moronic, given the fact he played a big match on Sunday.

  • So, Kris Commons lambastes Ambrose for the uphill task in the second leg?! ‘The manager picked him’. Surely the manager takes at least half the responsibility here?! Oh and Kris, if you looked after your side of the pitch, ye might have managed a goal or two. 3-0 is not the end result of one players errors, it’s a team. And another thing, that was one classic European ‘lesson’ given last night by Juventus. Naivety springs to mind here, both on the players and management, a serious lack of patient football was needed, not hustle and bustle that’ll get you past most Scottish sides, with the exception of Inverness Caledonian Thistle obviously:-)

  • What have rangers and Celtic got in common?

    They’re both British!!

    • Rangers were indeed british until they self destructed.

    • Lorraine you don’t have a clue what you are talking about, which is evident from your posts throughout this article.

Rangers have nothing to do with what happened at Celtic park last night and from my own experience as a season ticket holder of some twenty five years I think they still reside in Glasgow, which if I am not mistaken is still part of the British Isles.

I have many friends and family who support Celtic and have done for years…it has never been about religion for us. We will leave that to the small and feeble-minded people on here. It’s about true rivalry on a football pitch. I texted my brother last night to slag him but at the same time congratulate them on a game well played. He was at Celtic Park last night…were you?

I despise all the thinly veiled supporters of both clubs who say they love their club and its not about religion when it clearly is the case.

Hypocrisy is alive and well unfortunately. Until it all stops there will always be bigotry.

    • Mac, I’m not going to lower myself to your level. I know exactly what I’m talking about. The only statement of fact I made in my posts was in relation to the fact that Rangers were a british club until they imploded (so I can only assume it was this which touched a raw nerve with you). I was merely responding to the worst joke in human history…. no other reason. You are completely correct, rangers had nothing to do with the game last night…. did I say otherwise? I have been to Parkhead many times and to many european away games. My husband was at the game last night, we couldn’t both afford to go…… and your point is?? I must say, your post made me so bloody angry. I am NOT in any way bigotted, I love watching football, I couldn’t care less about all the sectarian bulls**t that comes with an element of the Celtic support and I can assure you that I have never uttered the words of an IRA song or anything resembling one.
And I’m still gutted about the result.
