REIGNING MUNSTER CLUB champions Dr Crokes lost their senior championship game in Kerry since November 2009, in this evening’s first round tie against Rathmore.

Dr Crokes lost the 2009 county final to South Kerry but since then have strung together four successive Kerry titles and also lifted the last three senior crowns in Munster.

But they came up short this evening by 0-14 to 0-9 against their East Kerry neighbours Rathmore.

Dr Crokes, who were without long-term injury victim Colm Cooper were in front by 0-7 to 0-5 at half-time. Indeed they had led by 0-7 to 0-2 by the 20th minute but would not score again until the 54th minute.

Rathmore, who include Kerry senior defenders Paul Murphy and Aidan O’Mahony in their ranks, took over in the second-half. They were 0-10 to 0-7 clear by the end of the third quarter with Kerry minor goalkeeper Shane Ryan, who plays outfield for his club senior side, landing some big scores as he finished with 0-8 overall.

The winners were in front by 0-12 to 0-7 with seven minutes remaining and despite Dr Crokes finally getting off the mark for the second-half, Rathmore held on to win by five points. Dr Crokes are now set for the backdoor route as they will try to get their season back on track.

Last year’s defeated finalists Austin Stacks did triumph in their opening round tie today while there were also successes today for divisional teams Shannon Rangers, Mid Kerry and South Kerry. Last night East Kerry and St Michael’s-Foilmore were both victorious while Kenmare’s inability to field a team saw their game against Dingle called off.
