Taylor to face Jonas or Underwood for Olympic medal

Ireland’s biggest medal hope was today handed a tough draw in her quarter-final.

KATIE TAYLOR WILL  face either Team GB’s Natasha Jonas or USA’s Quanitta Underwood in the Women’s Boxing 60kg quarter finals.

The Bray native has received a bye into the Round of 16 as the top seed, which means she has no involvement until August 5th, when she will take on the victor of the Jonas/Underwood bout. The winner of that is guaranteed a medal.

Taylor has faced both competitors in the recent past, beating Jonas 6-3 on points last year at the Strandja tournament while she scraped a victory over American Underwood in Barbados in 2010 en route to qualifying for the Women’s World Boxing final.

She has avoided facing a very familiar foe just yet, with Russian Sofya Ochigava still lurking in the draw. The 25-year-old controversially ended Taylor’s three year undeated streak at the Usti n Labem Grand Prix in 2010.

Taylor did defeat her in qualifying for London 2012 though, as she picked up her fourth world title with an 11-7 points victory in May.

  • I hope the quality of her opposition aren’t lost on people. She beat Jonas by just 3 points in a very low scoring bout. Barely beat Underwood and lost to Ochigava. Any 3 of these girls could beat her. I’d suggest everyone taper back the “guaranteed a gold medal” talk until it’s around her neck.

Having said that she is our best Gold medal hope. But it’s still just a hope.
