THE DETAILS OF the hero’s welcome for Olympic gold medalist Katie Taylor to her hometown of Bray have been firmed up.

Thousands are expected to line the streets of the Wicklow town on Monday with Bray Town Council urging fans to ‘get out and shout’ for Taylor, fellow Olympic boxer Adam Nolan and coaches Pete Taylor and Zauri Antia.

With live music getting underway at Bray Bandstand at 3pm on Monday, an open top bus will arrive at 5pm and Katie and Adam will be presented to the waiting crowds.

Live music will restart at 5.30pm and the party will continue until 9.30pm, when the night will be rounded off with a huge fireworks display.

Anyone planning to attend is advised to use public transport, and there will be road closures in Bray beginning at 1pm on Strand Road and Meath Road.

Limited parking will be available at Florence Road, Herbert Road, Carlisle Grounds and St. Thomas’ School at Novara Avenue.

A welcome home ceremony is also expected in Mullinagar on Monday for John Joe Nevin, who’ll be bringing home either a silver or a gold medal following his bout this evening.

The Olympic Council of Ireland has said that there will be no immediate Dublin event for the country’s 66 Olympians when they arrive home on Monday, stating that the athletes are eager to spend some time at home first.

TheJournal.ie understands that plans are being made to hold a formal State event honouring Ireland’s participants at Farmleigh in about a fortnight’s time.

The Dublin Airport Authority has also said that no official event will be held at the airport on Monday, apart from a restricted access press conference.

No Dublin event – for now – to welcome Ireland’s Olympians home>

  • David , I think that , even for a limited period of time she’s earned the right to say what she wants , when she wants about whomever she wants ! Doesn’t mean you have to listen or agree .
Enjoy the well earned celebrations Katie .

    • Nobody has the right to say what they want, to whom they want, about what they want when they want…Nobody.
Anyway I think she is a fantastic athlete and an amazing boxer and a true living legend.
The greatest that Ireland has ever seen.
But just cool down down on the aul God praise. The meek shall inherit the Earth.

    • David read your own words, you say “Nobody has the right to say what they want, to whom they want, about what they want when they want…Nobody.” Nobody includes YOU so take your own advice ” and ” just cool down down on ” do as i say and not as I do speech “The meek shall inherit the Earth”. Your words

    • david, i’m not arguing with you, your words are correct except you dont believe them, “Nobody has the right to say what they want, to whom they want, about what they want when they want…Nobody.” I said this includes you
and you are also correct she is “I think she is a fantastic athlete and an amazing boxer and a true living legend.”

  • How did an article on welcoming hope one of our great Olympians degrade into a religious shoot out. Your all a pack of Trolls…

  • Way to go Katie! We are all so proud of you. I am so glad my young daughters (and son!) have such a wonderful role model to look up to. Thanks for bringing home the gold to Ireland – it has been a wonderful week for all of us back home who feel we got to share a tiny piece of your victory. You are an inspiration!

    • indeed..But I’m sure he/her/squirrel has more pressing things to be dealing with it to be honest.

    • I just think that it’s ironic to say the least that this supposedly benevolent god always has the time to intervene on behalf of successful athletes, actors and singers at award shows while allowing men, women and children to be blown apart by rockets in placed like Libya. He must be dead sound.

  • Welcome Home Katie you are an inspiration and an Irish hero..! Congratulations…
(just tone down the God stuff please thanks)

    • Katie credits God and Jesus Christ with her success so DON’T YOU DARE try to take that away from her. Boxing is a “sport” which advocates children engaging in combative behaviour which psychologists have time and time again declared dangerous. She is ONLY a HERO because she walks with Jesus! God Bless You Katie!

    • What a ridiculous comment re: the god stuff. She’s the one who won because of what she put in, she didn’t do it for your entertainment therefore you have no say in what she does after a fight. You want to decide on post fight celebrations, get off the couch and win your own gold medal!

    • david would you say the same if she a muslim, hindu? I’m no religious freak but if that’s katie’s thing so be it. she tones nothing down for nobody. she is who she is and is doing no harm to anyone.

    • In fairness to Mairead-it was Katie Taylor who kept talking about Jesus after her win. Her best friend is the local parish priest who attends all her fights. Why do people hold it against Katie because she is religous? 86% of Irish people are Catholic so you are in the minority if you don’t agree with Katie’s belief in the church.

    • @mairead as a psychology student I would be interested in knowing what psychologists said that, when they said it and what research led to them making that statement.

    • Teresa — How about you just do some superficial research! Even Jung and Freud took a profound stance against boxing in the Burns council and repeatedly with the YMCA scandal it has come out. Finish your degree in PSYCH and then do your due diligence. God bless you!

    • @Mairead. Just thought I’d post a quote from your Twitter feed so people can see what your true opinions are …

      “@MaireadOConnor6
Boxing is savage and frequently leads to brain damage & incontinence. Katie Taylor is the Irish poster child for savagery. #katietaylor “

    • I’m a devout atheist so naturally enough I’d prefer if she didn’t thank God every two minutes, but if it’s what she believes let her do what she wants. I only hope that all the young girls who have been inspired by her to take up boxing or other sports aren’t also inspired to take religion more seriously.

    • with all due respect mairead, u are talking about two classic psychologists, one of which has had many theories disproved. I am sure their views on boxing would be challenged by many well educated, modern day psychologists – particularly those in the field of sports psychology. I have little interest on boxing at all but I do take issue with those using psychology for their own agenda. bandura claimed his research showed on screen violence negatively impacted childrens behavior, a claim which had been disproved countless of times.

    • Hey Dave if you don’t like her religious views you don’t have to listen to her. There’s a yoke called a remote which enables you to switch the telly off. Nobody is forcing you to follow her matches.

    • Katie’s religious beliefs are her own
business. I don’t have any problem
in her thanking God for her success. I haven’t noticed her trying to shove her beliefs down anyone’s throat, so let her be. She’s a great girl and great credit is due to her parents for bringing her up to be such a level headed, nice girl. Her religious beliefs are a matter for her and nobody else…

    • Umm, Ciara, you do know that Katie isn’t Catholic, right? So she is, in fact, a member of a minority religion? So if you’re a Catholic, then, no, you don’t have the same religious beliefs.

    • Little old Ireland loves Katie now after ignoring her for years such is our sad bandwagon mentality, 1 gold medal is an utter disgrace for a first world country with a population of 4m plus and more importantly no track and field just a niche boxing event. How many people here are involved in or know of a boxing club, I would say not many..we would want to wake up as a nation and quit going delirious over just one minority sport athlete

    • I don’t think it’s fair to tone down on the god stuff!! Katie ain’t pushing it down your throat, is she putting pressure on you to believe as well?? it’s what she believes in and I say fair play!! she’s made me consider following her religious footsteps… maybe yi u should so the same!!

      Reply
    • Well, Siobhan, I totally agree. Katie is a great example of the great value those of minority religions bring to Ireland (despite the erroneous idea that she represents the Catholic majority!) and it would be a wonderful legacy if she encouraged people to learn about more religions, such as her Pentecostal faith.

  • Can we not just enjoy Katie’s win, and the other boxers, without people arguing over bloody religious beliefs. Get real.

  • my problem with the ‘god’ stuff is katie believes God helped her get this far. well nice for her to feel this…but does that mean God didn’t help anyone else? this sort of christianity is rather elitist . i would never have a God that favours one and not another and this is, in a round about way, what katie is saying. so i, as a christian, yes, i am…believe that God can give us all hope and strength etc but that does NOT mean God doesn’t support those or doesn’t care about those people who somehow failed to get a medal. we have to be soooooooo careful about speaking about how God helps us, it can make others believe God has abandoned them…that’s why this evangelical zeal is rather difficult to take. but well done katie….great boxing. very proud of you.
