IRELAND’S JASON QUIGLEY has claimed gold at the European U23 Boxing Championships.

The Donegal fighter, from Finn Valley BC and competing in the 75kg middleweight division, defeated Germany’s Dennis Radovan by a 17-11 decision at Kaliningrad’s Sports Palace in Russia.

The 2009 European Youth Champion had saw off Russian southpaw Maksim Timofeev and Victor Carapchevschii of Moldova in the previous rounds.

“I’m absolutely delighted with the win, Quigley told Irish-Boxing.com.

When I won the bronze here I was very happy to have my second European medal, but when you get to that stage you always want to change the colour and thankfully I did.”

Quigley’s team-mate Hugh Myres had to settle for a silver medal earlier today after the Ryston BC light-flyweight lost out by a single point (11-10) to Kariun Sogomonyan of Armenia in the 49kg division.
