FOOTBALL FANS WERE treated to what was unquestionably one of the biggest and most exciting games of the season last night, as Chelsea progressed to the Champions League final at the expense of Barcelona.

And the game was special for another reason too – it surpassed the Super Bowl (12,233 tweets per second) in terms of most tweets per second ever in terms of sporting events, peaking at 13,684 tweets per second, according to the site.

Talk on Twitter reached its peak when Fernando Torres scored Chelsea’s equaliser, effectively sealing their place in the final in the process.

And the record could potentially be broken again in the near future, with tonight’s other Champions League semi-final underway, and the final to come, not to mention next week’s all-important Premier League encounter between Man City and Man United. which seems likely to decide the title race.
