Ireland v Croatia: Player ratings

How did the boys fare in Poznan tonight?

IN WHAT WAS a hugely disappointing night for Irish football, Ireland were second best to their Croatian counterparts for the full 95 minutes. Here is how we thought the players did.

Shay Given – 5

Made a super save from Ivan Perisic on 21 minutes after being caught out by Mandzukic’s header for the opening goal. Unfortunate to see the Croatian striker’s effort then come off the back of his head for the third goal.

John O’Shea – 4

Should’ve been closer to Manduzkic for the third. The couple of occasions he was given the chance to put the ball into the box, his crossing wasn’t up to scratch.

Richard Dunne – 5

Caught out a couple of times in possession in the first half but did what was required of him for the remainder of the game.

Sean St Ledger – 6

Showed great strength to hold off his marker and steer McGeady’s delivery home for the equaliser.

Stephen Ward – 4

Could have done better to clear the danger in the run-up to Jelavic’s goal but replays show he was clipped slightly while attempting to clear the ball.

Damien Duff – 5

Quiet night for Duff, who put in a shift on the right flank but had to show for it at the final whistle.

Keith Andrews – 6

A tough ask to keep Luka Modric under wraps and found it difficult to keep track of the Spurs man. Had Ireland’s four best chances of the second half late in the game and should have scored with the header in injury time.

Glenn Whelan – 5

Let the ball run carelessly to concede a corner which led to the second goal. Never really managed to get hold of the game.

Aiden McGeady – 5

Started brightly and put in a good delivery for the equaliser but didn’t have the impact so many had hoped he would after a splendid 45 minutes against Bosnia Herzegovina. Taken off for Simon Cox.

Robbie Keane – 4

Fairly anonymous in the first half and didn’t get a whole lot of joy after the interval. Brought down by Schildenfeld for a clear penalty, which was waved away and replaced by Shane Long with 15 minutes to go. Frustrating night.

Kevin Doyle – 6

Drew a lot of fouls, particularly from Corluka, early on by putting himself about well. Didn’t get much of a chance in the second half, however, as he was withdrawn on 52 minutes for Jon Walters.

Subs:

Jon Walters – 5

On for Doyle and held up the ball when it was played into him.

Simon Cox – 5

Stangely, Cox was picked instead of James McClean and Stephen Hunt to do a job on the left. Looked sprightly but what do you expect from a player quite clearly out of position?

Shane Long – 5

Given 15 minutes to impress and was full of energy. Didn’t get the breaks he needed, though.

  • can’t argue with those ratings – ireland – i hate to say – were shite

i’ve never seen an Irish performance in a championship so bad….tactics badly lacking… no plan B – why would so many players have such a bad game and all at once? Fck me Italy and Spain are going to murder us unless we stop defending in our own box – terrible Trap…terrible!

    • A 5 for Given but a 6 for Doyle. Are you out of your mind? Only for Given it could have been 5 and he can’t be blamed for shocking defending. Doyle lost his form 2 seasons ago and is still looking dorm it – did nothing and Robby wasn’t up to much either. Too many pf our players are unfortunately well past their best at the top level – Dunne, O’Shea, Duff, Keane, Doyle.

    • Given? Are you mad – it was his worst ever performance in an Ireland shirt – nowhere near the first goal, headed in the last himself. Not once did I see him organising his defence, talking to Dunne – he just looked lost from start to finish – you could see it in their faces when the cameras closed in of rthe national anthem – they just looked like frightened kids…

That first goal was just shocking – the guy was on his knees, had to climb to his feet and just let the ball bounce off his head from 15 yards into Given’s near post – and he was on his far post! Schoolboy defending, schoolboy goalkeeping and as for Ward slipping Jelavic through for the second…

  • Unfortunately this is the level we are at. The only saving grace we can get from the next two games its to try to first save face, and second, blood young fearless players… Long for doyle, gibson for whelan (just because we have no one else), give mclean at least 30 mins. Duffer for me was the only player who tried his heart out, the two center halfs were in an arm wrestle for most of the game….

    • What do ya mean we have noone else McLean, Coleman, hunt ,hoolahan, long ,Walters even cox in his right position should have got a chance and I’m sure there is others either left out or left on the bench that should be there playing might of been a bit foolhardy to stick with players that got us there don’t know

    • Gavin, I mean no one else to go into the center of midfield… We didn’t bring hoolahan or mc carty… Just 3 center midfielders. Yet we brought 5 wingers….. Makes loads of sense doesn’t it ;)

    • @gavin I think he is talking about the centre midfield not the whole pitch

    • Oh right but if ya look at the players that were left at home or on the bench if they started this game the team looks a more open to playing a better game we should have gone all out for this game as it be the only chance for a win fair play to trap getting us there but I remember a fan on telly (when he left red bull stranzenberg I think was the name of last team he managed) to prepare for a lot of draws and she was delighted he left just saying

  • Completely outplayed, but luck and decisions weren’t on our side either.

Only tiny glimmer of hope now is that the pressure is off cause the team clearly bottled it in the hype of that match. So a miracle win will at least keep our campaign mildly interesting.

  • Given was not to blame for two of the goals were was the backs o shay was shit , keane was a joke fighting with the ref in the tunnel , Doyle shit ,the changes made made a difference in tge second half .god I hope we don’t play like that in the last two games

  • Trap uses the same system if it’s Germany or Andorra …at this stage that will not work …Croatia are not a great side but our system is worse…

  • Robbie Keane should be stripped of the captaincy…he’s a hopeless player and doesn’t inspire his players. I’m no fan of Mick McCarthy but when he was captain there wasn’t a minute where you wouldn’t hear him barking out orders. On tonights performance, it’ll be a short lived tournament for us sadly.

  • Paul R well said to hear the fans singing at the end was making me so proud most other fans would have left with 20 mins to go .so I give them 10/10 and they will go out on the town to night and give the Irish ppl such a good name all over the world ,,, well done lads and have a drink for me !!!!!!!!

  • Found out, at last, sadly.

System is sh1t, as is the squad of players. This is why I retired from (attending) international games after 37 years (;-(.

Didn’t stop me bursting my lungs shouting at the telly, or teaching the kids new swear words though!

    Sad night. Onwards!

  • Ireland were not shite tonight. It basically boils down to, that we are just not good enough at this level. We just dont have the quality of players to make any sort of impact. This is the hand we have been dealt and trap as our manager is playing a type of football with players that are just not good enough. Croatia are by far technically superior to us. If the game ended in a draw we would of been happy cause we know we are punching above our weight. Get realistic and wake up. Any sort of result in our next game against spain and we will be celebrating. Good luck ireland and i will be hoping that we can pull something out of the bag against the world champions.

    • The 14 unlikes – we had 14 clean sheets against poor teams and now we are being found out. Traps system does not work. He needs a new perspective and has to motivate a team that is too introvert. Keane is not a leader. Given for captain

  • have to agree with above re Kevin Doyle, any touch at all and he was on the deck. someone made a point that we dont cheat like med teams, well, look at doyles carry on. hadnt the ability to hold the ball so he cheated. worse again, if he hadnt we wouldnt have scored at all. the way the croats closed them down tonight was exceptional, when we did that under jack the whole nation loved it. Like Croatia, we had players with real ability who were willing to slave on the pitch instead if stroke it about like they wanted to. Croatia were streets ahead, first to every ball, hunted in packs, used it well and had acres of space. It is difficult to give any Irish player more than 5. They were outmuscled, outclassed and physically beaten off the pitch.

  • There is a certain stupidity/naivety to thinking that the same formation/team/tactics that beat Armenia will beat Croatia.
Cox coming on was a crazy call- he fell over the ball twice for godsake

  • please remember you cannot criticize Ireland at all ! because you’ll be accused of being unpatriotic and not getting behind “the lads”

  • Feeling very proud that we have got here but without referees being given technology to help make decisions games like this will have, or any football games, will never be just. We lost – probably deserved – but fair or unfair decisions change every sporting event in lots of different ways. Unlike many of our European and Mediterranean counterparts we (generally) don’t cheat. God help us for the spanish and Italian games.
