Open thread: After last night’s win, should Giovanni Trapattoni be given more time?

Two out of three ain’t bad but is the Trap era over for Ireland?

Trapattoni faces the press last night.

GIOVANNI TRAPATTONI IS this morning back in Italy after a long week-and-a-half away from home.

The Ireland coach saw his side hammered 6-1 at home to Germany last Friday night in a crucial World Cup qualifier at the Aviva Stadium.

And in the days before last night’s win over the Faroe Islands, the manager was forced to defend his position and fight for his reputation.

Yesterday speculation mounted that the Italian would be relieved of his duties, whatever the outcome in Toshavn. After the game Liam Brady insisted Trap should be allowed to finish the job he started while the likes of Brian Kerr and Eamon Dunphy insist the Trapattoni era is over for the FAI.

So what do you think? Should he stay or should he go?

Player ratings: here’s how we rated the Boys in Green

Faroes v Ireland: That one’s for Trap, says James McCarthy

  • this we were always playing for second place line they are trotting out is some BS by the way. are we just going to roll over for teams we perceive to be potential group winners. why bother selling tickets for these games if thats the case. if that is the mentality he has instilled in the squad its enough to have him sacked. what happens if sweden go top? do we not try against them then as well. its a joke. he cant motivate these guys. we have pro full time players who should be able to go out and make life difficult for any team, give them a few headaches, compete, tackle harrass and above all else roll over for no one.

  • The issue is the non use of players of a high enough calibre,ie” premiership level as the barometer”, after the euros fiasco it was clear that tactically traps team were set up in an archaic system that’s easily exploited by modern international teams using more fluid systems.the older players are past their time but will always be legends.this campaign should have recognised that by using the younger players in a revised system that reflects modern football, that it doesn’t says it all

Had a feeling this would happen too. If we played Sweden or Austria away, it would have been a different story. Trap got lucky!

Then again if we hadn’t had to play Germany we could be three wins from three. I guess it’s a bit like penalties; it evens itself out after a while (3 days in this case).

Time to pack his bags. The fundamental problems haven’t gone away – communication, conflict with players etc – and the three outstanding players last night were three he’s refused to utilise in the past and publicly criticised. I wonder what starting eleven would have been selected had all Trap’s favourites been available?

    Reply
    • He has an iron personality – his way or the highway. This can be good in a manager and it has served him well in the past – he has a brilliant record. His system brought an average squad to the Euros – however – I agree with you, his inability to communicate himself properly has led to an Irish side that plays below it’s true potential. We shouldn’t lose 6-1 to any International side. The question is who will come here?

  • If we can afford to move Trap on then he should go but only if there is a sane sensible replacement ready and willing to step into the job. The media would love Roy Keane purely on the basis that it would give them loads of headlines, but its likely that all he would do is compound the existing communications problems as communication or good working relations with players have not been his forte during his brief managerial career. The availibility and apparent willingness of Mick McCarthy make him the ideal canditate in my opinion should the vacancy should arise.

Whatever happens we need to recall the shambles that Trap took over from the Kerr and Staunton eras ( 4th and 3rd place group finishes respectively). With the calibre of player available to him to come within a game of WC qualification and to qualify for the EC was a brilliant achievement.

  • I’m no huge Mick McCarthy fan but at least under him we played good football. People are saying we don’t have the players that he had yet we have plenty of players starting week in/out in the Premiership that are ignored. Ciaran Clark, Stephen Ireland (don’t shoot me!!), Wes Hoolahan, Anthony Pilkington (injured at the mo aswell), Shane Long, Stephen Reid, Joey O’Brien, Darron Gibson, Ian Harte etc etc etc.
What we need is some rebuilding. Personally I would love to see David O’Leary take over for the Following reasons 1. He can’t spend loads of money at international level which rules out his biggest weakness, signings. 2) Has a track record of introducing young players into teams(Woodgate, McPhail, Kewell, Harte, Smith, Bridges, Bowyer). 3) Plays positive passing football. 4) Cheap as chips so that the FAI can’t complain about money being an issue. 4) What other Irish manager has brought a team to the brink of the Champions League Final.

    • Typical Irish mentality, no belief, just turn up and do your best sure we’re crap anyway! It’s always 11 v 11 and anyone can be beaten on the day. Sweden came back from 4-0 down against Germany – that’s what motivation and team spirit can do. It’s traps job to motivate the team but he can’t cos he only puts a half arsed effort into the job.

  • The FAI aren’t going to sack him. it’ll cost them and is a fortune. Remember Denial O’Brien is paying half his wages. What type of replacement could you attract without his input. We don’t have quality players and he should be left to continue a campaign that we were always going to struggle in. I for one would hate us to qualify for Brazil and end up being humiliated.

Trap is now lost, he isn’t really picking the team any more he is letting public opinion do it. Wilson, Mcarthy and Coleman should have at least a dozen caps each at this stage but he doesn’t really like them so they weren’t even at the euros. He keeps saying where are the players, we have none, but here is an example of three that were available all along and he chose not to use them. Clarke and Shane Long are two more premiership players he doesn’t use.
If we leave Trap in place, he will weather the storm and then revert back to his old ways which is negative long ball football and playing the grafters ahead of the footballers.
Our players are not nearly as bad as he makes out, we need a manager who will talk up the players and encourage them, not constantly point out that they are muppets compared to his playing ability.
Mick O Neil is obviously doing this with the north and they are making progress with dreadful players.

  • Trappatoni now knows how the Public Sentiment is. 6 points from 2 Away Games is all he could get; we were never going to beat the Germans with a b side out.
Let him qualify in 2nd place for Rio, or not, then make the decision.
Who else out there has the quality and experience to replace him; let’s just hope he has learned the lessons from the Euros ,and MOVE ON !

  • What’s meant by “After a long week and a half away from home”…..am I missing something ? he gets paid 1.8 million euro a year to manage Ireland , there are only a couple of internationals a year and he is notorious for not attending any other games in Ireland ( such as Sligo winning the Title on Sunday) and yet it’s portrayed as if this week and half when there were two internationals its somehow a big deal that he’s here a week and a half…FFS are we loosing the run of ourselves..

  • Need to be realistic. Change in manager won’t do much. The Irish team just isn’t as good as it was years ago. Blame the manager but forget that the individual players are just below average players who plays for lower teams and lower leagues.

  • After the Euros, many people and commentators were saying we should forget about qualifying for Brazil and use this campaign to blood new players. Now whether it’s through injuries or retirements, that’s what’s happening. It’s hard to rebuild a team like rebuilding anything it takes time…If we get to the playoffs or Brazil that’s a bonus. Belgium have been in the wilderness for years but now the time they invested in bringing new players through is finally paying off. Let’s see where we are at the end of the campaign. Changing horses mid race is never a good idea.

  • No. He has had his chance, last night Coleman and Wilson were fantastic at the back, these are two players who are playing week in week out for their clubs in the EPL yet Trap, in his wisdom has practically ignored both of them. Ciaran Clarke at Villa is another, Alex Pearce at Reading, then you have Houlihan and Pilkington at Norwich, to many young players are not being given a chance because of Trap’s loyalty to certain players who he sees as the backbone of his team but everybody else sees as the reason we got hammered in the Euro’s and by the Germans! We need a manager who has some vision and a plan for the future, a manger who will pick in-form players and who will actually spend some time watching our players especially in some of the less glamourous grounds where, most of our players find themselves these days. Apart from Everton we have no players in the top end of the EPL. Robbie Brady at Man Utd is a star in the making but is not yet getting any real time on the pitch for them, the lads at Stoke, Norwich, Villa and Reading deserve a chance and with friendlies coming up it is a great opportunity to see some of these lads in action. Trap won’t (at least on his history so far) give these lads a chance and will revert to the same old 4-4-2 with the same faces and the same failed system as he has done up to now. It’s time for a change, it’s time for some new ideas and some new thinking. Thanks Trap for your contribution but it’s arrivederci tme, ciao!

  • We couldn’t have hoped for a better start. We were never going to get anything against Germany and two somewhat difficult away games won. No basis to sack him after that.

    • couldn’t agree more, people think a change of manager and suddenly we will be getting results against the top teams. He is picking the players people were calling out for McCarthy, Coleman etc. and they are starting to grow, McCarthy especially. I mean most of the German team play champions league for top teams, we were outclassed simple as a rash change of manager will not change this. As for Mick McCarthy that’s laughable.

    • He’s not picking them by choice though, his hand was forced last night due to injuries. I doubt any of McCarthy, Wilson or Coleman would have played had it not been for injuries. If he stays on let’s see his next team when he hams a full squad to choose from

  • If biggest Irish team star is Robbie Keane who is 32, but looks like in his early 40′s and when playing for Ireland then the wheel-chair person would probably stop him, yet he managed somehow 3 goals in 6 games in Aston Villa. Bit weird, isn’t it. Ireland just needs better players I am not much familiar if there’s any promising young players under 21 or so, but better be, otherwise no manager can do miracle here I’m afraid.

Have a little respect he has one of the best managerial C.V in European football so I think the name calling is a little harsh. I myself am a season ticket holder I also go to as many of the way games I can and was also at the Euros in the sumer.I am not saying everyone shouldn’t have an opinion but to name call is low. Some people forget the days before he came I for one don’t as I was out in Cyprus when we were beaten 5-2 but maybe Roy Keane or bring back Mick or Owen Coyle might be the way forward in some people minds.I for one think that mangers should be judged on results and under Trap we have played 53 games won 23 lost 13 and have had 17 draws we have only lost 2 qualifying games in 4 years there the facts

    2. Why would you give the guy a further 2 years before the ball had been kicked in the euros at all.Why not just say we will have a look at things when the tournament is finished then at least the 2 million wouldn’t be a problem.
