Gallery: Irish take unlikely point from Moscow mission

Richard Dunne and Shay Given led Ireland in the Russian capital. Here’s how it when down.

IRELAND COME AWAY from Moscow tonight with a crucial point in their quest to reach next summer’s European Championship finals.

Richard Dunne was a colossus at the centre of a bombarded Irish defence while Shay Given pulled off a series of unlikely saves.

We went minute-by-minute but here’s the best pictures from a good afternoon’s work:

  • What a performance from Shay Given and Richard Dunne. Incredible pressure on both of them due to the ‘no show’ from the rest of the team!

  • Dunne for president

  • Stop being so God damn negative. I have criticisms of the Irish set-up too: The centre midfield is below average and the wingers are meh, but we’re getting the results we need.

The squad the Trap has been picking is now like a club team. That’s vital for the lack of talent and you can see that in the work effort.

Has everyone forgotten our second string, captained by Paul mcShane, beat Italy recently? We’ve gone 7 games without conceding and we won a ‘tournament’ too.

Remember what are defence was like before Trap? 5-2 Cyprus.

by all means criticise but don’t bring do much negativity into the matches. The team needs the support.

Ps: the names that will be linked with the Ireland job are: Joe kinnear, John Aldridge, and Roy Keane. We might be able to beg Kerr to come back from the faeroes (sp?).

PPS: Slovakia 0 – 4 Armenia! We’ve a food chance of qualifying now for the 1st time since 1988.

  • I hate people saying we shouldn’t go to a tournament just because were not good enough. Fair enough it’s horrible to watch, but whatever ye think, the likes of dunne, given, differ et al deserve a crack at another major championship, and I for one, do not want to be looking at another major tournament without ireland in it. So qualification is EVERYTHING! And if they get there I think they’ll play with more freedom, because when they’re under that much pressure to qualify the emphasis is always on not conceding. Hence why were still in with a shout with a limited bunch outside of the old heads who keep on trying their best for this country. Time to get behind the troops for the next two games!

  • I’d like all those who are moaning about this team, especially those who were at the Aviva last week (and allowed themselves to be out-shouted by the Slovaks) to answer this question: how many of the Irish players will be playing in Europe this season? And how many of the Russians?

That’s the simple reality: we’ve got a bunch of average players, who train with each other once in a blue moon, and who are playing to the height of their ability. We should be extremely proud of them, and Trap is doing a great job.

Ireland did a good job against mighty Russia!

  • Good defense. We could have done without the pic of Delaney as it spoilt the whole thing!

  • Imagine how good we’d be if we could actually score goals…

  • Why is there a smug picture of money grabbing leech John Delaney included. What has he done for Irish soccer other than take a high salary in a amateur organisation off the backs of hard working premier ship players. With all their money could the Irish management team not bag a extra jearsey for each player other than resort to drawing a number on dunnes back. Put your tie back on delaney and work as hard as dunne.

  • Dunne and Given won us a point. Without those lads, we’d have been screwed. Russia lost two. It’s that simple. Their finishing was awful, considering the amount of possession and chances they had. Now that Armenia pulled off the shock result of the night, it’s all to play for. Keane needs to get the thumb out and do his job, and justify his captaincy. He wasn’t there last night. A good think-in about midfield discrepancies and where we can find some coherence up front, and who knows?

For a mediocre squad, they surprised all and gave us a good chance of qualifying. No-one could’ve expected it’d finish nil all by half time. All in all, congrats to the boys. Well done! Six points in October!!!

Richard Dunne especially is a f**king hero today, war wounds, wrong shirt and all!!

  • It seems to me that us Irish are becoming so much like the English fans..think were better than we are! It’s lead by the media, we dont have players like keane, Brady, macgradh, irwin anymore so should be happy were we are at

  • When Paul McGrath left the squad, I hoped we would get a defender of HIS calibre. Well, we have. His name is Richard Dunne. A wall of a man. And, he can run with the ball. Given was excellent too.
We all know our ability to keep possession leaves a lot to be desired, but, we are getting the results and teams must view us as being very difficult to beat. It’s not all bad.

    • Former Villa and Ireland hero McGrath was watching – and in awe of Dunne’s dynamic display.

He wrote on his Twitter page: “Congratulations to Richard.

“That was the best performance I have ever seen from any Irish centre-half – and that includes myself.”

      No better praise.

  • Another thrilling 0 -0 draw. We’re just not good enough. No point in qualifying,we can’t win anything by just drawing every game at best. Time to step aside Trap.
