Forward thinking: Should Trap take the Long road or go with Simon Cox?

Reports from the Ireland camp suggest that the Ireland manager will go for the West Brom man ahead of Shane Long in the Euro qualifier. Is he right?

GIOVANNI TRAPATTONI’S IRELAND side were today put through their paces at Gannon Park in Malahide ahead of their trip to Skopje.

The Boys in Green face Macedonia in a crucial  Group B showdown on Saturday evening. Ireland are tied on 10 points with Slovakia and Russia while this weekend’s hosts have four.

Captain Robbie Keane reportedly pulled up with a suspected hamstring strain and is now an injury worry; assistant manager Marco Tardelli indicated Keane wouldn’t play if the game was tomorrow, but he’ll be given every chance to make the line-up.

If the captain does make it, this is reportedly Trap’s preferred side: Given, Kelly, O’Shea, O’Dea, Kilbane, Hunt, Whelan, Andrews, McGeady, Cox, Keane.

The decision to choose West Brom striker Simon Cox ahead of the in-form Shane Long will cause plenty of debate.

Cox has impressed since his recent debut and successfully partnered Keane during the Carling Nations Cup. But should the Tipperary man be trusted to lead the line?

Who would you start against Macedonia this weekend?

  • Please forward the results of this poll to the FAI just so Trap can see that Long has to start .. No disrespect to Cox but Longs goalscoring record this season has to give him the nod !!

  • I think Long has a great future, but on Monday in Championship play off final he was poor and looked exhausted. I would start Cox and spring Long with 20 mins left if we need a goal.

  • Why is Trap so single minded?! Jesus Christ! After the season Long has had he should be a guaranteed starter, another bad move if he starts with Cox. If I was Shane Long, I’d be raging at that.

  • I think qualification will be unachievable of we lose. And now robbie keane might be injured

  • What about Jon Walters? He’s been the best Irish player in the Premiership this year, yet he doesn’t even get a look in. Just look at the goal he scored against Chelsea in April. He ran from the halfway line and skinned the entire defence before sticking the ball. Plus at 6 ft he’s a big powerful player, right up Trap’s street.

    • All valid points for Walters. But he’s 27, with only 1 friendly senior appearance, which doesn’t tie him to us. He was ok to play for Stoke, but decided to get his shoulder seen to last week, when the chance to play himself into Trap’s plans arose.

He’ll probably get into the next squad though; I can’t imagine Folan getting another invite after the stunt he pulled.
