RONAN O’GARA HAS been charged with getting Munster ticking for their crucial Heineken Cup match against Edinburgh.

Described by Donncha O’Callaghan, who has been named beside Donnacha Ryan in the second row, as ’80 minutes of rugby to have the chance to have 80 minutes more’, Munster need to a win to keep their cup hopes alive.

O’Gara has got the 10 jersey ahead of Ian Keatley despite calls for the veteran out-half to cede to a playing rival that is the superior player with ball in hand.

The Corkman has got Munster over the line many times in the past decade and will be tasked with overseeing backline operations and pinning Edinburgh into the corners when possible.

The Reds need a win, first and foremost, but a bonus point would give them an excellent chance of reaching the Heineken Cup quarter-finals.

Earls in the centre

Munster coach Rob Penney has opted for Keith Earls at outside centre. He will partner James Downey in the midfield axis while Casey Laulala bides his time on the bench.

Damien Varley. who scored a try in the 33-0 cup win over the Scots at Thomond Park, starts at hooker and with props Dave Kilcoyne and BJ Botha flanking him up front.

Simon Zebo and captain Doug Howlett are on the wings while Conor Murray is at scrum-half.

A bustling back row of Peter O’Mahony, James Coughlan and Tommy O’Donnell have been selected together and should cause plenty of problems for Dave Denton and his Edinburgh teammates.

Munster: F Jones; D Howlett (c), K Earls, J Downey, S Zebo; R O’Gara, C Murray; D Kilcoyne, D Varley, BJ Botha; D O’Callaghan, D Ryan; P O’Mahony, T O’Donnell, J Coughlan.

Replacements: M Sherry, W du Preez, S Archer, B Holland, P Butler, D Williams, I Keatley, C Laulala.

  • Come on Munster ! Remember to the brave and the faithful nothing is impossible !!

Keep the faith folks and remember all of the times that ROG, Donners etc have produced in the past !

  • Keatley and Sherry should be starting. D. Williams has not covered himself in glory in his appearances so far this season. What was the point of bringing back an experienced, slick scrum-half like Peter Stringer if you don’t give him game time?

  • Suspect, first time I’ve ever thought ROG needs to sit one out. Tries being the order of the day and all. I hope he does the business. No idea why Strings is left at home again, mind boggling decision. Nice balance in the back row. I would have preferred Sherry as well, he’s come on very well this year.
Fingers crossed for the bonus point.
Hope all our neighbors go well too.

  • O gara > keatley..simple as that, keatley is yet to deliver when it matters and o Gara will give Munster the territory they need to pressurise Edinburgh,if any changes need to be made JJ Hanrahan should be starting as Downey has been very disappointing and lacks pace.

    • Keatley has been outstanding for Munster whenever’s he’s been given the chance. Much more of a handful in attack, a relatively reliable place-kicker, and excellent in defence. ROG is a tactical master, but provides very little in attack or defence. When tries are an imperative to stay alive in the competition, it seems incredible that Keatley isn’t being given a start. When he’s on the pitch the backs start to perform.

  • Ugh, Sherry should be starting if ROG is. Varley far too inconsistent these days, misthrows far too much. Varley is aggressive in loose and might work better with Keatley pushing things

  • Come on Munster! Positive thinking! Good too see Ronan on from start. Need to play as a united team – one for all- all for one! I forecast a good win for Munster.

  • They need to score tries. And they start O’Gara.

    See you next year,

  • ROG starting is madness

He’s not coping with the new pushing right up brand of attacking play that Penney is introducing

ROG is a super player but when he plays all the points come from him, as in not many tries.

Keatley is a far better fit for this game. I’m a Leinster fan and am delighted that ROG is starting, which was something I never thought I’d say !!!

  • Sorry to upset my Munster cousins but earls is a finisher on the wing. Playing him at centre he simply doesn’t convert as many. If I wanted tries he’d be in the wing.
