Eamon Dunphy: Trapattoni is ‘taking us for a ride’

“The FAI have a big decision to make and if they don’t make the right decision — which is to pay him off and get a better manager — the consequences will be dire”

EAMON DUNPHY SAYS it’s time for Giovanni Trapattoni to walk away from the Ireland job.

The RTÉ football panellist says the Italian doesn’t do enough to justify his FAI salary, which is supplemented by businessman Denis O’Brien.

Ireland were hammered 6-1 at home to Germany on Friday night and the Italian faces yet more problems in the camp ahead of tomorrow night’s Faroe Islands test.

“I think he’s taking us for a ride to be honest,” Dunphy said on Today FM earlier. “He’s getting a lot of money and there’s very little work involved.”

“When Mick McCarthy left the job he actually didn’t take a pay off, he walked and it was a very honourable thing to do,” he continued.

“Trap will tell you and he told the press that he was doing a great job, that we’ve moved up the world rankings and by implication, the players aren’t good enough. He doesn’t know enough about the players and he’s the one getting the €1.8million and he has to be at the matches in my view.”

Today’s Irish Independent suggests Trapattoni and his assistant Marco Tardelli could be sacked within the week — and Dunphy reckons one-time Ireland player, Owen Coyle, could be the man to fill the role.

“There are managers out there,” he told Ray D’Arcy. “Owen Coyle was a very good manager at Burnley, he went to Bolton and didn’t do so well. But I like him, he’s got a lot of character, he’s a passionate guy and he’d know the players. This is the problem, this man does not know these players because he hasn’t seen them playing consistently. And you have to know the difference between Shane Long who didn’t start on Friday night and Simon Cox who did.

“The other problem is that they won’t be able to sell the tickets to the Aviva. Germany are an attraction but when we play the Faroe Islands and Kazakhstan, Austria and Sweden, that stadium will be pretty empty. And that’s a real problem.

“So the FAI have a big decision to make and if they don’t make the right decision — which is to pay him off and get a better manager — the consequences will be dire. So it’s a lose-lose situation.”

  • It should have been all over for Trap at the end of the Euro’s but.. alas in their wisdom the FAI had already decided he was the man to take us through the world cup qualifiers, bad mistake! Trappatoni, whilst improving on our last great Delaney, “world class” managerial appointment has shown himself to be too narrow minded and far too cautious when it comes to giving the younger and in form players a chance. Some of his selections are totally mad and there are players who have simply given up on the team. No wonder Given and Duff bailed out, Gibson, McCarthy, Wilson and now Kelly are all or have all been pissed off by him? I don’t normally agree with Dunphy but he has a point this time and many Irish football supporters would agree. Time to say Ciao Giovanni!

  • I hope that the FAI can work out that it would be profitable in the long term for them to pay off Trap after the Faroe’s match, because if we can fluke a win on tuesday, our qualification for the World Cup is still very much alive.

We would then have 6 months to rebuild with a new guy. The new manager’s debut in november’s friendly would in turn be far better attended, and if things looked positive from that match we’d keep the fans coming for the remainder of the qualifiers.

Stick with Trap and not only will we not qualify, but nobody will come to the games for the next two years, and it will cost the FAI a lot more than 1.8m euro.

Mick McCarthy to take over and get us to a playoff.

I personally believe we have the quality in personnel to do that if you consider what’s available AND the guys who haven’t even made the squad – Hoolahan, Pilkington, O Brien, Noble, Duffy.

Who knows, a change in management could even get Stephen Ireland interested in apologising and returning!

My worry is that Delaney hasn’t got this sense of foresight. Here’s to hoping though!

Capello was paid 6m by the FA to coach Team England.
Then you have Jose, Alex, Pep etc!

    • He one of the highest paid international team managers in the world , can’t compare with league management by Mourino etc , The brazil mgr gets 1.4 m , German mgr 2m , but Germany is 10 times te population so it looks like we are paying very well ( for crap)

  • @dan you just nailed it man. the team can play wit passion pride energy and a bit of f**king temper no matter what abilty they have. we will never be the most technically gifted side but we can want it more. historically these qualities have achieved great things and are a basline requirement for any succesful team eg barca when they lose the ball run like rabid dogs to get it back. trap has obviously lost the ability to motivate this squad and if you cant do that it dont matter one iota if your the most tactically astute coach on the planet. which he is not! we can still have a rattle off austria and sweden if he goes now. if he stays i can only see this embarrasment continuing

I was just thinking watching Fridays match that if I had to show a child what exactly a captain should not be, I would use John O Shea as an example, he is missing every attribute required for the Job.
Another thing that occurred was why the hell does O Shea keep going up for corners, in his whole career I don’t recollect him getting on the end of one.

What a fkkkking joke….

  • First of all, trap is not a bad manager, check his cv, he just is no good at managing Ireland! Second, we haven’t got the players that we used to have. Third the FAI need to start investing big time in developing the youth coming through and stop paying themselves disgraceful salaries e.g John Delaney (who should also leave as well)

  • yes Trapattoni must go but things wont change much till Delaney goes

  • Trap goes on about working with the limited selection of good players to pick from what does he want we have a population off maybe 5 million on the entire island. We have always worked hard and played for each other as a spirited team. We never had a pool off players trap is used to from working in Italy Germany etc. but we always got by on hard work and merit and playing for each other like when Roy keane ran every blade off grass in lansdowne road against holland in2001 the game against France under trap in Paris our players to their players one to one we were a mile behind them but as a team we kicked there ass, with team spirit and hard graft. The same team spirit trap has drained from the team

Given, Gary Kelly, Dunne, Staunton, Harte, McAteer, Holland, Kilbane, Roy Keane, Robbie Keane,Duff

Rabble that Trap had to put out on Friday night – all the team spirit in the world won’t do much to improve this lot….
Westwood, Coleman, O’Dea, O’Shea, Stephen Ward, Andrews, Fahey, McCarthy, McGeady, Simon Cox, Walters

  • Yeah, we really showed Kazakhstan a thing or two. I used to stand up for trap but cannot watch this shite any longer. We are close to being San Marino is this isn’t sorted.

  • Indeed Frank2521, let’s get rid of the best panel in the history of punditry on these islands. I’m sure Kenny, Ronnie and Sadlier would be just as entertaining – in a stick-two-pencils-up-your-nose-and-pound-your-face-off-the-coffee-table kind of way.

I’ve been a defender of Trap for longer than I’d like to admit, but there’s not doubt at all now that he has lost the ability to get the very very best out of a useless crop of players. What we need now is a man that can do just that, and I think the best candidate is Mick McCarthy. In fact, Delaney should drop to his hands and knees and lick the feet of Mick in order for him to come back. Coyle would be my no. 2 choice.

As well as bringing in the Holahan’s, Pilkingtons etc that the whole nation believes will get us out of our mire, the new manager would have to bid adieu to the Romero-era zombie John O Shea and the poisonous reptile Robbie Keane. Only then can we truly look forward into the abyss rather than looking down at our shoes.

  • Of more interest to me was that Own Coyle played for Ireland… I comoletely missied that, or at least didnt register they were the one and same Owen Coyle.

Should never have given trap an extension before the Euros. The sensible thing would have been to wait.

  • I love when he and Giles talk about players Trap hasn’t seen play such as Wesley Hoolahan, How often has he seen him play I wonder? Professor Giles failed to recognise Patrice Evra recently ffs….

  • While Trap is a bad manager, his players are also part of the problem. They are laid back, and don’t seem to care less. His translator is purportedly seeking a job in RTE so obviously they know time is running out.

    Reply
    • no sorry the Irish team play their hearts out. they are amazing ambassadors for their country. Trap doesn’t believe in his players and therefore has to go

      Reply
    • I think it’s more to do with the manager not instilling confidence in his players. He has consistently said that the players are not good enough and even recently said Ciaran Clarke wasn’t good enough to play international football. If the manager doesn’t believe in the players they’re not going to believe in themselves.

      Reply
    • I don’t think it really helps when you have a manager who constantly tells the media that his players just aren’t good enough when compared to opposition – how on earth is that supposed to motivate (part of his job description). Don’t see too many other managers out there doing this.

I also take issue with his team selection and tactics – it worked for a while, but he has been found out and still quite stubbornly refuses to take action.

Not like I hate the man or anything, but is passed his sell by date with this team for sure.

      Reply
    • They signed him up pre Euro but ought to have some contingency in the contract in the event such disastrous results occoured, of course the closed shop FAI did not do that and now have to pay him even more to say sayonara. Realistically though few managers could be expected to qualify with the panel available, we can debate one player over another but even those who feel hard done by are hardly world beaters, its a fairly mediocre bunch relative to teams past and despite Traps errors we need to accept the limitations of having relatively poor talent for an international soccer team.

“I belief in my players, I do not know ma team or names but I have heart you know. In Ireland you are pride peoples, like your St Patrick in Fields Of Athenry. Ma players have belief, I am pride in may players, in Ireland and like the song say do not forget the shovel for go to work. We must belief, I am pride in this job, I win in every country a century ago. I happy to take money for doing nothing. Ma wife and I we laf a lot at the situation but I belief in ma players, for fans is everything. is not for money, I am worth 1.5 million a year, I so this for love of Ireland and the guineess, ara begourao”

Time for a younger gang to get a job. O Herlihy might not be missed either. There are done very good well informed commentators on the TV now.
