Trap admits uncertainty over future of Keane and Dunne

The Irish manager says the LA Galaxy striker has failed to respond to one of his texts.

GIOVANNI TRAPATTONI HAS hinted that Shay Given may not be the only high-profile Ireland player to retire from international duty in the wake of the side’s Euro 2012 exit.

Having recently expressed confidence that none of his senior players would retire, he now seems decidedly less certain, suggesting that the future of both Richard Dunne and Robbie Keane has yet to be clarified.

He told reporters: “Richard sent me a message recently saying he would not be ready for the game with Kazakhstan because he needs a few weeks to recover from his injury, that the game was too soon.

“I answered him and said after this friendly, after he has recovered from his injury, we would review the situation, but I’ve told him we need him, it’s true. He will let us know.”

Meanwhile, in relation to Keane, Trapattoni said:

“I’ve also sent him a text, but he’s not answered me. I’ve checked my mobile.

“I will speak with him before I announce my next squad (in around 10 days’ time for the Kazakhstan game).

“He needs to tell me whether he wants to come back or what he wants to do.

“We can decide after this game because it’s important for us to look at the other players. We have (Shane) Long, (Simon) Cox and (Jon) Walters.

“After this game, and before the one with Kazakhstan, we can think about this situation.”

In relation to tomorrow’s match with Serbia, Trapattoni said he was looking forward to giving some of the squad’s younger players the chance to prove themselves, despite the less-than-ideal circumstances surrounding the game.

“I’m not expecting a great result or a beautiful match because we all know the players are at the start of their season with their clubs.

“But if we can get a good result, that brings confidence and builds the trust within the team.

“When you have young, new players their morale goes down after a defeat, so a good result would give us that confidence and trust.”

  • Its time to let the young players show what they can do.

    • I agree 100%, time for the younger lads to shine. But to all the begrudgers remember, we’ve not qualified for any major tournaments in years. Ok, our supporters won the gold in Poland, our teams display was dismal, but we still qualified and Ireland revelled in it. We had a great time. Onwards and upwards I say, learn from mistakes, with a new manager right now he’d have to deal with someone else’s mistakes, trap is a professional, allow him to rectify his mistake.

  • Yes Robbie was a great player but his day has past time to bow out and let some young blood in ,,,, players and manager ,,,,

  • The master of communications! This man is cad. Imagine if any other manager came back from Poland having conceded 9 goals & scored just 1…he would have long since been sacked. A million & a half a year & he can’t communicate with his players…he won’t travel to see them play… Hopefully he will be gone by Christmas.

  • What age is trap? In a professional job on big bucks and he communicates like a 12 year old girl? Texting!!!

  • Keane would be no loss at all….was hopeless at the Euro championships.

  • If we have no hope of qualifying for the next world cup then now is the perfect time to bring in a new manager. Let him build a squad over those two years and the attack the Euros because Trap will just take the money and we will still need a new manager in two years time.

  • I laugh at how people criticize Robbie keane at the euros, the whole team was shite! It’s not just a 1 man team there is another 10 players! He’s a legend Ireland’s top goal scorer nuff said!

  • Can anyone suggest a better manager?

  • Apart from a goal against Germany in the 2002 World Cup ten years ago, Robbie Keane has been dirt for Ireland, majority of goals scored in friendlies and spends 85 minutes of every match off-side, seems like a nice lad though

    • He scored against France in a world cup play off, Estonia in a euro play off. Scores against Russia, holland, Croatia, Germany, Spain in competitive games to mention a small few. Who has he not scored against? Top scorer of last campaign, top scorer in major
      Finals, too scorer of all
      Time. 100+ premiership goals. All
Facts, sorry to say but long, Walters, cox, Doyle can’t come close for
      Club or country

    • What a rubbish comment ! At least check your stats goose or whatever your name is before making such rubbish quotes.

  • Sad thing is that Robbie is the only real goal scorer that’s every played for Ireland with more than twice the rest of the squad combined. Cox, long, Doyle and Walters are not prolific scorers and neither are the wingers. We need him

    • You’ll have to tell me what fact is wrong?
Did Robbie not score against France in paris of for the world cup play off?
Did he not score against Estonia in tallin?
Did he not score against Russia in euro qualifier on 8-oct-2010. Competitive game.
Did he not score against Spain in the last 16 of the world cup 2002?
Did he not score against holland in the qualifiers sep 2000 in amsterdam?
Is he not our top international goal scorer with a remarkable 53 goals?
Is he not our top scorer in major finals with 3 goals?
Has he not scored 126 premier league goals (only ten have scored more)
Sure i said Croatia instead of yugoslavia but I don’t think that is grounds to justify disregarding this record. Can you see Shane long scoring 100+ premiership goals? Or doyler netting 53 times for us?
I’m afraid I can’t, perhaps Robbie will only be appreciated when he’s gone?
