DUNDALK HAVE ENTERED the race to bring Cork youngster Shane O’Connor back home to Ireland.

Lilywhites manager Sean McCaffrey has worked with the 21-year-old left-full at Irish underage level and told the club’s website today that he has spoken to O’Connor about a possible move to Oriel Park.

O’Connor is back on the market again and attracting plenty of interest from Airtricity League clubs after Ipswich Town terminated his contract by mutual consent last week.

League champions Shamrock Rovers were also linked with a move earlier this month, but Stephen Kenny’s need for a left-sided defender has lessened since Conor Powell’s arrival at Tallaght.

“It will be difficult to compete financially with Shamrock Rovers,” McCaffrey said, “but we’re as big a club as anybody. That’s the bottom line.

It’s a great place to play. Shane has played for me before, and the type of football we’ll be playing will suit him. I’d certainly be very interested in him and I’d like to get him. But we’ll see what happens.

O’Connor also attracted interest from League Two outfits Port Vale and Southend United, both of whom offered him trials after Ipwich manager Paul Jewell indicated that the player was free to move on.

O’Connor’s last appearance for Ipswich came in the 3-0 Carling Cup semi-final defeat against Arsenal in January 2011.

“Thank you to all the Ipswich town fans for your support!” he tweeted last Friday. “Sorry to be leaving but couldn keep going on this way and not playing football Or even been giving the chance to play! Although might have to look for an opportunity now seen as I was stopped going last summer!!!”
