In pictures: Donegal’s All-Ireland heroes visit Crumlin Children’s Hospital

Ahead of a long night in the hills later, it was first stop Crumlin for the Sam Maguire and the All-Ireland football champions this afternoon.

YESTREDAY, THEY SEALED the county’s second-ever All-Ireland victory with defeat of Mayo in the championship decider at Croke Park.

And after a night of celebrations, Donegal’s footballers dropped in on some of the patients in Crumlin’s Children Hospital. Here’s how it looked:

  • I love that this is a ‘thing’. I have less than zero interest in GAA, and don’t get the whole thing tbh. But I love that the cup and the winning side get up and spend some time visiting sick kids in hospital and brightening their day a bit. The same thing with Katie Taylor going in with her gold medal. Awesome.

  • Hero’s are people who do extraordinary things, who fill us with moments of great inspiration, the Donegal team, the staff of Crumlin and the the child which fill the wards are all Hero’s and it’s amazing to see them come together in one place, I hope these images will make people realise that this country is a great place because of the people in it, God didn’t make enough of them.

  • It appears to be a kind gesture for the victorious teams to visit Childrens’ Hospital, as they usually do. Considerable added value would be attached to the visit if the GAA would dedicate One Euro of the price of the All Ireland Ticket and present it on the day of the visit to the Hospital. On the basis of approximately 82,000 attendance, it would mean 82,000 Euro as a contributiion to the Hospital. If they dedicated 5Euro it would mean a contributiion of over 400,000 Euro. Consider what this would do for the future welfare of such children.
Or, perhaps, the GAA would consider 100,000 from the 400,000, to the Chidrens’ Hospital, and 100,000 each to, for example, Cancer, Heart Foundation and Hospice Foundation. There is little point in spreading the cake too far as it would rapidly loose its’ potential to make significant imporvements or impact.

Other large sporting fixtures might follow the example.

  • I’d say half the children will be drunk for the day on the fumes coming off those players!
