Cheers lads! Heineken Cup rugby confirmed for Connacht after Ulster and Leinster wins

The men from the west were celebrating after this weekend’s results mean European rugby will return to Galway next year.

THE SEMI-FINAL WINS for Leinster and Ulster mean Connacht supporters will get to cheer on their team in the Heineken Cup again next season.

With the provinces securing their place in the 19 May final an Irish winner is guaranteed, leaving the door open for Connacht to qualify as the fourth team from Ireland.

Luke Murphy from Connacht says the advent of top flight European rugby in the West of Ireland has seen major changes both within the Sportsground and throughout Galway.

Thousands of supporters flocked to the city to see Connacht take on Harlequins and Gloucester as well as French powerhouses Toulouse this season. He added:

Next season promises to be an equally thrilling journey for Connacht. This comes as a huge boost to the club which finished off their first ever Heineken Cup this year with a memorable victory over Harlequins in the Sportsground.

  • The Nordies and the Blues have done a great job in making a first ever All Ireland HEC Final, outstanding achievement. Getting us into another season of HEC Rugby is just the cherry on the icing on the cake… :-)

  • Connaught headquarters should be in athlone. Location, facilities, no greyhound track or D4 wannabes, u20′s play there so irfu obviously see it as a good place to play.

    • @ Soupy Norman – I don’t quite get you point Norman? Wannabe 4d’s? None of them in Galway, or if they were, they went under with the recession. Why would they play in Athlone when the key population centre is clearly in Galway, and revellers and fans alike can have a good night out afterwards? If anything they should try to move it to Pierce Stadium in Salthill, that would be great.

    • Soupy, Galway is a great location given that it is the largest population base, and is a great spot for foreign fans to base a weeks holiday from.

As an aside it is “Connacht” not “Connaught”. The latter is the British spelling, associated with the Connaught Rangers etc…
