Brendan Rodgers turns down chance to talk to Liverpool – reports

The Swansea boss reckons he’s better off at the Liberty Stadium rather than Anfield, it seems.

HIGHLY-REGARDED SWANSEA boss Brendan Rodgers has turned down the chance to hold talks with Liverpool chiefs over the managerial vacancy at Anfield, according to reports this morning.

The Northern Ireland native led the Swans to the top flight and impressed in keeping them in the top flight with a swashbuckling, possession-based gameplan.

Liverpool, of course, sacked club legend Kenny Dalglish on Wednesday after they finished a disappointing eighth in the Premier League.

Last night, Wigan chief Dave Whelan granted the Reds permission to speak to his young manager Roberto Martinez. The Fenway group were also apparently keen to talk to Rodgers but it now understood he’s snubbed the chance.

What do you think, Liverpool fans?

  • Good decision. Many young managers try to step up too soon.
I’ve read today that there is a list of 12 candidates for interview. This seems to be a very well thought out process this time.
Gather as much info as possible and make the decision then.
I’ve also read that the DoF position is to be changed and responsibilities split up. There will still be a DoF, but he will be more in the role of overseer than actively involved in the squad.
Also, there seems to be a shift in the managers position. FSG seem to be more interested in the European model of a head coach, rather than a club manager. So the final result of the search might surprise a lot if people.

  • Good decision by Rodgers, I heard big Sam turned the job down aswell as he’s made himself available for the Chelsea or Barca job

Wasnt Brendan Rodgers also asked (by journalists) about the chelsea job (considering he DID work there too) and his reply was ‘im trying to make a career, not destroy one’ wise words from Rodgers, i presume he thinks the same about the liverpool job, build a decent swansea career over the next few years, THEN move on.

  • Its too early for him. Getting a bit worried that the big names don’t seem to be coming up though, probably down to FSG wanting a young manager. Only problem with that is can the like of AVB, Martinez and them convince the likes of Gerrard, Carra, Reina, Agger in what they want to do. Personally I think Fabio Capello should be a least interviewed for the job. Perfect candidate to sort Liverpool out and can attract the type of signings needed in the summer.

  • I’m a Newcastle supporter but I dnt tink it matters who takes over da pool der a club on a major decline, gerrard is past it, carragher was past it 3 years ago, Henderson, Adam, downing, kuyt & maxi not good enough for challenging for the champs league!!

  • It will take more than a new manager, no matter how good he is to fix Liverpool. They need to get rid of most of the squad they are either too old or too crap to be serious contenders. Gerrard is too inconsistent, carragher too old and shelvy is league of ireland standard at best.

  • Too true. Chelsea and Liverpool are, at present, poisoned chalices for any manager in my opinion. Chairman and fans with high expectations. Similar to Newcastle. Whoever takes that job is going to have to do exactly what Alan Pardew did or they will lose the support of the fans(assuming that they get it in the first place). I think FSG have made a serious error of judgement and, while I hope I’m wrong ,I do think it will come back to haunt them.

No bottle, laughable.. Has sense is more to the point. Why are people banging on about capello n the likes as if he is gonna do an interview + don’t think they could match his wages in any case

  • Rightly so, this kind of nonsense of getting everyone to go for an interview is beyond stupid, it never works, identify top three managers you want & make a quick direct move for them. Reminds of the time the FAI were holding interviews & ended up appointing Staunton & Robson.
Do they really think managers are going to go for the job, risk getting turned down for it & end up looking pathetic in front of their own fans

    • Apart from Whelan spouting to the press, this will be kept behind closed doors as much as possible. No one should hear who has been approached, unless they leak it themselves. So if a clubs fans get in their back, it’s their own fault.
I think it’s the most sensible approach. By talking to a mixed bunch of candidates, someone can be picked that suits their ideas, or someone who has better ideas.
This whole idea of only choosing one or two candidates is a bit outdated. Name any job where a vacancy is filled in this way? English football seems to be stuck in this routine.
It’s time for a fresh approach.
No one wants a return to the Cecil approach; Ask the media who should get the job and give it to their darling of the month. Ala Hodgson.

    • Do you honestly think any top manager is going to go for an interview along with eleven other candidates for the job. Capello is being linked with Chelsea this morning ffs, do u think he’s going to go for an interview for the Liverpool job if he’s not guaranteed it. if Liverpool want a top class manager, they need to make a move for him fast and cut the bull. Otherwise your gonna be a left with a list of interviewees that shouldnt be let any where near the job in the first place.

    • Aidan, how do you think managers are picked on the continent?
Just because that’s the way it’s done in England, doesn’t meant its the way to do it all the time.
If Capello picks CFC, that’s fine. He didn’t want the job. Anyone that doesnt want the job will not interview. Those that do want it will.

  • A little question for those saying FSG should just target 2-3 managers.
In who’s opinion would they be the top 2-3?
David Dean seems to be advising them at present, should they just go with his opinion?
Take a sample of say 10 fans and ask them who their top 3 would be.
I’d say you would come up with a list of between 10 and 20 names.
Who’s to say that the person that comes up with the list of 2-3 managers is right?
Much better to talk to as many people as possible and get as many opinions as possible.
By the way, my top 3 would be Klopp, Bielsa and Benitez. In no order.
Can’t see many agreeing with me which would prove my point.

    • Agreed. Liverpool have to make a statement with their next manager choice and go for a proven match winner like Capello. No idea why they’ve approached Martinez or Rodgers

I don’t really understand your statement.
We didn’t treat Rafa badly, he was treated badly by H&G and their puppet Cecil.
95% of the fans that I have a daily contact with were disgusted with how Rafa was treated, and would welcome him back.

  • Danny u just said and i quote “disgusted with the way rafa was treated” did u r did u nor boo him after games at the end of his term. And 95% of course 95% because who will tell u that they wanted him to go???????

    Reply
    • My God, you seem to think you actually know me.
No, I didn’t boo him, nor did I want him sacked. One bad season didn’t warrant sacking. Not when what had been achieved in the 9 months previously at the academy had been taken into consideration.
And yes, there were fans booing. That doesn’t mean they represent the majority. If that were the case, you’d say that all NUFC fans go to games topless and display their massive girths.
I think I know a few more LFC fans than you do. In fact, I think even you would have to agree, I would only want what’s best for the club, but that would not be a priority for you.
