WHEN KATIE TAYLOR climbed out of the ExCel Arena ring an Olympic champion not long after 5pm this evening, one of the first Irishmen to congratulate her was Barry McGuigan.

“She was amazing, it was incredible,” the former world champion told TheScore afterwards in London.

“I never experienced anything like it in my life. I don’t even think it was like that with me. It certainly surpassed any noise that I heard before.

“She is loved, she is remarkable, she is an amazing kid, she has a lovely family. Just everything that could be said about her I repeat, she’s amazing. And I’m so happy for her father who’s committed his life to her.

“He’s a great fella and he’s responsible for the level of skill that she has because he just worked the drills over and over and over again. Amazing, just amazing. It was a very close fight and don’t get me wrong, she drew the first but could have lost it and she had a poor second but the third and fourth rounds were brilliant and that’s what’s won it for her,” the Clones man told Will Downing.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to Katie Taylor’s triumph

  • Well done Katie just goes to show we should start concentrating on sports we do well in like boxing and stop with this dream of doing anything in the athletics section throwing enough dirt at a wall and hoping that some might stick doesn’t work there has to be an investment some of these athletes are on a grant of ten thousand disgracefull there is not the hunger for the Irish athletic association to put in the hard work for our athletes but the boxers have sorted themselves out and looked after there boxers big time well done Katie proved a lot to a lot of people and maybe now u might get the facilities u need and more than deserve even before ya won the gold in ur gym

    • I hope boxing does get the facilities they need. I also hope the athletics people and other athletes get what they need too. 10K isn’t a lot.

I’d particularly like to see a whitewater stadium in Ireland, but then that’s just for the sport I love.

It would also be nice to see decisions made for the betterment of sport rather than by the politics of sport. I’m sure anyone who is deeply involved in sport could point at a few examples.

    • Typical short sighted, uninformed, reactionary view. Great idea, let’s hand every kid in the country a set of boxing gloves and we’ll clean up at the Olympics.

Did it ever occur to you that people should choose what sports they are interested in and that the state should fund those sports on that basis? Probably not, as you just seem interested in the reflected glory of Katie’s fabulous achievements rather than the provision of sports in this country for the entire population.

The funding of sports is not about winning medals, it’s about providing facilities that provide health and social benefits for all of us. When a diamond like Katie or the other boxers comes along we all rightly rejoice in their success but that shouldn’t reflect on the achievements of our other Olympians even if their efforts aren’t appreciated by armchair fans like yourself.

Congratulations Katie. I was in the ExCel Arena yesterday afternoon and it was an unforgettable experience. Fabulous to see such a graceful and hard working person achieve the ultimate honour in their chosen sport. Amazing stuff.

    • The funding that is provided to athletics is not worth talking about and doesn’t help athletes do better ten grand for the year for an athlete to survive on is not good look at what team GB spent on their team 300 million so why not stop spending money from the pot that isn’t making a difference and give a better facilities to the boxer who apart from Sonia Osullivan and a couple of horse riders are the only ones achieving something worth while and giving a return on the money spent

    • Like I said, you have a short sighted, armchair fan’s view of sport. Sports funding is there to cater for facilities so everyone can participate, not just the elite, though that’s all you seem to be interested in. The grants that the elite receive are only the tip of the iceberg.

Equestrian sports already receive huge amounts of state funding even though they are exclusive sports, participated in entirely by the well to do. But you want to give them more money because some guy might come home with a medal every four years or eight years or whatever. Of what real benefit is this to the country?

Sports funding in this country is far from ideal but the attempt should be made to broaden support for all sports so that participation rates increase across the board. Not a narrow focus on the elite that the mob focus on for two weeks every four years and ignore the rest of the time.

  • Brilliant, Honest and Clean. She walks tall with integrity and her medal will not be taken back. The boxing clubs should get running water now. How much have the IOC spent on Cian O Connor compared to Katie? And he is a proven cheat and a liar. Well done Katie. Proud to be Irish with your example.

Isn’t the issue with Barry McGuigan that he took British citizenship and boxed under the British flag? I think that may be a lasting memory for some people. I can understand why some people would thing this is a bit much

  • @Tomy Iona. It doesn’t matter how old I am, I know the man is a boxing legend and never chose sides when it came to NI. I was simply stating that the man is a douchebag he never stops giving himself the big pat on the back always manages to turn every conversation to be about him. I have been in his company several times and watched him as a pundit and he has never once given any Irish guys any mention. Am I not entitled to my opinion? Also I never said he waa shite pundit.
