Another twist: Armenia hammer Slovakia on crazy night for Irish football

“I told the players St Patrick was looking down on us tonight,” says Trapattoni after scoreless draw in Moscow.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE  a day makes.

First Ireland escape from Moscow with the unlikeliest of points, and hours later, Armenia hammer Slovakia 4-0 away from home.

All four goals came in an incredible second-half in Zilina.

Check out the match stats here, if you don’t believe me.

The standings in Group B now make intriguing reading:

table1

Ireland have Andorra next up and then those Armenians in the final game at the Aviva Stadium. Armenia have Macedonia as well as the trip to Dublin while Slovakia and Russian face off in what is now even more intriguing.

There’s many, many permutations but if Trap’s men manage to win their next two ties, they will guarantee at least a play-off place.

Trap, for his part, was quick to admit t oreporters that his team had ridden its luck tonight.

He said: “It is impossible not to recognise that we have been lucky in this 90 minutes. The determination and the application on the pitch of the team, particularly of the senior players like Richard Dunne, Shay Given, Keith Andrews, Aiden McGeady was the pull for the younger players who gained confidence from them.

“I told the players St Patrick was looking down on us tonight.”
  • Elsewhere, Northern Ireland’s outside chances of qualification end with a 4-1 defeat in Estonia.

Its in ours hands now, we can make our own destiny…

  • In our hands again thankfully! That game against Armenia is going to be huge. I’d say we’re fairly likely to end up in the play-offs at this stage though, winning the group would seem ridiculous..

  • The determination and application of senior players like Keith Andrews ?? What game was that senile old man looking at? We’d be better off with 2 armchairs in the middle of the park than Keith Andrews and Glenn Whelan.. At least with armchairs there the ball might rebound off them and go forward !! Credit to Dunne and Given as always !!

    • Totally agree. Without Dunne & Given as our backbone tonight we would have been hockeyed and even then we were lucky. We’re papering over the cracks that our midfield is just not good enough. Think the luck of the Irish pots needs refilling big time after tonight!

    • Andrews put in a brilliant saving tackle in the closing minutes and I actually think that was the only value he brought to the Irish side in the whole match. Honestly, are Whelan and Andrews really the best midfielders this country can muster?!!

  • anyone remember how ireland got to japan/korea 2002? holland should have one 4 or 5 nil at landsdowne road
ireland crossed the half way line once and jason mcateer scored

we got a play off against saudi arabia which we won

the players and coaching staff made their own luck they deserve to be in this position

    • We beat iran in the playoff, we beat Saudi to get to the 2nd round then losing to Spain on penalties. Duffer was on fire and could have won it for us in normal time.

    • you’re right ,i stand corrected. my point is the glass is half full if (hopefully when) we get to poland/ukraine 2012 it’ll be soon forgotten how we got there. anybody remember gary mackay?

    • Wasn’t he the Scottish player who scored to allow us to qualify in 1988? Hmm methinks we do remember. On the team, to say we are lucky is a big understatement. You can’t build a team without a proper functioning midfield and while we appear to be in an incredibly volatile group, we will be found out. I hope it won’t be in the match v Armenia.

  • Yeah it’s our own hands. Just have to win to more games and if that gets us the playoff spot, then hope we get a good draw and win both of them games. I’d take that " if your not in you can’t win". But in this f%*ked up group we could still end up top team. Ole ole days again love it.

St. Patrick was looking but there was no victory, so, someone was looking from the other side … Stalin, perhaps?

  • On the brink of finishing second in a group that includes a country that’s a gagillion times our size and people are still moaning. Amazing. Well actually that’s not what’s amazing – I can’t believe there’s so many negative comments and nobody has had a go at Robbie Keane yet!

  • This group is wide open now.. although if we win our last two games we are guaranteed a playoff with 21 points. IF’ the Russian go to Slovakia and lose we are then in the driving seat to win the group. Again i must reiterate we must take maximum point against andorra and armenia.

We arent the best team in the world but i am so proud of those players. Dunne was a god last nite!!

  • Oh dear..senile is not the word. Things were not working against slovakia yet he persisted with 4-4-2 (with, i’m sorry.. 2 of the most limited midfielders imaginable) right up until the end. Lucky enough there to come away with a draw. Could have stuck on Hunt way before 7 mins before the end. Tonight we were absolutely blessed as the russian completely wasted a host of chances…again ran us ragged with a 5 man midfield, like they did to us in Dublin A YEAR AGO. Make no mistake we rode our luck in the last 2 matches and are still in this only because of a heroic defence in both games – heroic as our midfield is incapable of ball retention of any kind or imposing themselves on the game. Doyle does not look happy. This is another player Trap has pissed off over the course of three years. I am not happy.

    • Oh lighten up. We were never world beaters but now we are a step closer to qualifying for Europe for the first time since 88. We always ride our look and have had weaknesses but if it gets us through I’ll be delighted. Would be great for the country.

  • Funny, every single article I’ve read on the web about this match and the team in general raises questions about the midfield and still Crapatoni insists on doing nothing. Strange.

  • Fair play – we drew a match – that between a former world superpower and a wee island on the windswept eastern Atlantic. If the contest were conventional (or nuclear) warfare or even chess then …????!!!

  • Would definitely prefer one all or nothing game with Armenia than another round of playoffs… Come on Slovakia!

    Reply
  • If Slovakia beat Russia then we are into a win or nothing situation against Armenia. A draw would be no good for us in the sceanrio that Slovakia win both their games, and Russia beat Andorra in their final game, leaving them both on 20 points. After we beat Andorra we will have 18 points going into the Armenia game. Too hairy to think about!
