AS THE MUNSTER revolution takes shape under Rob Penney, the exit door continues to spin with stalwarts forced to retire.
The latest is more difficult to replace than most. Murty, the southern province’s mascot.
A statement from the province announced that the iconic figure would hang up his size 23 boots (partly because of a chronic slow puncture) and will swap them for synchronised swimming goggles as he makes a late attempt at qualifying for London 2012.
The giant inflatable hero made a statement and everything, telling the club website:
“I have enjoyed my career with Munster Rugby but feel the time is right for me to move on and explore further sporting dreams. I was lucky enough to experience many of the club’s successes over the years but have decided it is now time to pass the mantle on.
“I wish to thank all the fans for their contributions throughout the seasons and hope my successor will inspire the ‘Red Army’ to the level I did.”
Just as Casey Laulala is on his way as replacement for Lifeimi Mafi, and BJ Botha came to fill Big John Hayes’ shirt, Munster will announce a replacement for the great Murty in the coming weeks.
